JSW Steel’s dismal Q1/20-21 results were worse than expected, with a large decline in revenue and a huge drop in earnings. In addition, leverage and coverage ratios deteriorated significantly. Positively, net debt was fairly stable while gross debt decreased. However, liquidity is weak, and cash and prospective operating cash flows cannot cover short-term debt and capex. Although we earlier expected FY 2020-21 to be dismal, we are further revising our full-year forecasts downward, expecting a y-o-y revenue decline of 29% (vs. -15% previously) and a margin 2 ppts lower than earlier projected.
