*Much Better Than Expected: Oversea Chinese Banking Corp. (OCBC.SP) [OCBC] posted 3Q20 net profit of SGD 1.0 bn, an SGD 298 mn (40.8%) increase on a linked quarter basis – well ahead of consensus. Two factors pushed the outperformance: 1) a somewhat justifiable SGD 400 mn (53.3%) decline in loss provisions (unlike DBS Group Holdings [DBS.SP]), as OCBC witnessed “negative”growth in net new NPLs; and 2) a 290 bp decline in its tax rate to 13.1%, which was additive to the bottom-line by SGD 36 mn or 3.6%;*Credit Improving In Reality: By our calculation, given the SGD 99 mn in net recoveries, we find that new new NPL growth was actually negative on an annualized basis at 2.3%. While we are ecstatic to see negative growth in net new NPLs on the back of strong net recoveries of previously charged off loans, we continue to believe that credit risk will remain elevated. As such, we find that reserves should be bolstered by SGD 288 mn – 25% of pre-tax results, which is a far cry from where currently DBS is; and*Insurance Weakness: Great Eastern Holdings (GE.SP) [Great Eastern] reported 3Q20 bottom-line results of SGD 287.9 mn, declining SGD 9.6 mn (3.2%) linked quarter. On an operating basis excluding market-related gains, the decline in profits was even more pronounced at SGD 24.6 mn or 9.4% over the period due to new business strain. New Business Embedded Value (NBEV) margins continued their descent to 37.0%  - down 1.1% linked quarter due a weaker Malaysian component. Management’s confidence is low and it anticipates the weaker economic environment to pose continued headwinds, and will reassess the dividend.

Earnings were materially weaker than what consensus has built in for Overseas Chinese Banking Corp. (OCBC.SP) (earnings release date November 5, 2020) – and pose a modest consensus miss for OCBC. Higher volatility in reported Great Eastern earnings decreases confidence in forecasts; and*Better Readacross to Regional Insurers: MTM gains would imply a negative readacross to AIA (1299.HK), Prudential (PRU.LN), ManuLife (MFC.CN), and of course the mainland Chinese insurers.

Asia’s Additional Tier 1 (AT1) bonds outperformed Tier 2 and Senior Unsecured securities, despite rather constrained credit risk sentiment. In rate markets, US Treasury curve steepening roared back. Concurrently, interest rate futures rose considerably on even higher federal stimulus expectations. Rate markets may be over-pricing the potential for a "True Blue-Sweep". The risk at this point is an effectively split ticket in which Senate Republicans, aided by conservative-Democrats, water-down federal stimulus bills. Treasury yields may gap down as a result. Bank valuations could follow. The sell-off in US Treasuries was not met with increased buying in Emerging Market (EM) or High Yield (HY) markets. EM investors were more focused on early 2021 fund flows while risk-free rates rise. HY investors contemplated the potential for higher default rates over the next year. An unsynchronized global economic recovery will make single name selection more important over the near term.Asia’s HY markets slightly outperformed the US’ as both indexes tightened slightly during the week. The relative outperformance of Asia versus the US resulted in slight spread compression between the two indexes, although the remain wide of last year’s average and this years’ tights.EM capital inflows and US dollar index levels were essentially unchanged during the week despite yuan appreciation. China’s yuan hit the strongest level against the US$ since 2018. As the week closed, a spokeswoman from China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange suggested an official tolerance of the higher currency level. Lower US-China tensions under a Biden administration could push the yuan even stronger. This may be beneficial for regional banking systems.Financial institutions issued over US$14 billion in USD and Euros. Amongst Asia-headquartered banks, the <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/sumitomo-mitsui-financial-group-inc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:217:1" rel="noopener">Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (8316 JP)</a> and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/kb-capital-co-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:3646:1" rel="noopener">KB Capital (021960 KS)</a> were the only financial institutions to access global capital market during the week. The <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/fbn-holdings-plc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:27846:1" rel="noopener">First Bank of Nigeria (FBNH NL)</a> brought a five-year note with an 8.625% coupon for Frontier Market investors. Meanwhile, oversubscription  in the Investment Corporation of Dubai’s note suggests positive investor sentiment towards Dubai, which should be supportive for the <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/commercial-bank-of-dubai" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:29706:1" rel="noopener">Commercial Bank of Dubai's (CBD UH)</a> recently issued AT1 bond. The bank reported a Common Equity Tier 1 ratio above its minimum requirement for the first time in one year following its capital raise in July and after incorporating the Reserve Bank of India’s recent asset risk-weight reductions. Yes Bank’s results should be positive for its 2023 US$-maturity note.Market Outlook: U.S. Treasury market moves this week suggest that the risk is now election outcome driven. The question is whether Democrats will truly sweep the Senate, House, and Presidency. Effectively conservative-Democrats could water-down federal stimulus efforts. At the same time, although stimulus may be positive for US risk assets, higher long-term rates may not be EM friendly. However, a rise in long-term rates may be tempered by the return of US Treasuries as a favored carry-trade option and by more targeted Federal Reserve asset purchase program operations. *Don’t Be Fooled: Citigroup (C.US) [Citi] reported 3Q20 earnings of USD 3.2 bn (EPS of USD 1.40) – increasing USD 1.9 bn (145.4%) on a linked quarter basis and coming in well head of consensus of USD 0.89 per share. Core operating results were even more impressive at Citi, improving USD 2.3 bn or 3.6x linked quarter. Citi cut its loss provisioning effort by USD 5.6 bn (71.4%) during the period despite net new NPLs remaining on an aggressive upswing;*Getting Squeezed From Every Angle: Citi’s operating revenues declined driven by both the decline in principal transactions revenue of USD 1.6 bn (39.7%) and NIM pressures. Expenses were problematic for Citi as well, increasing USD 589 mn (5.7%) over the same period and pushed its C&amp;I ratio higher by 10.1% to 64.4%; and  *Consent Order: On October 7, 2020, Citi announced a Consent Order with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York  and the Office of the Comptroller to take action to improve its risk management, data governance, and internal controls. There was also a USD 400 mn penalty.
