The Italian and Middle-Eastern private-equity owners cashed out some of their chips at the IPO price of 19 GBP but raised no new money for management to invest in the business. This was bound to end in tears...and it did.
Late last month we got the news that Canadian billionaire Stroll had beaten <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/geely-automobile-holdings-ltd" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:127:1">Geely Auto (175 HK)</a> for a stake in the business. Lawrence Stroll will invest over 500M GBP in the company in a series of capital injections (fresh capital + future rights issue) at 4 GBP/share. What Aston Martin needs more than anything right now is a new "vision" on how to bring iconic profits to this heritage brand.

In the press release, we learned that a consortium of heavy hitters was joining Lawrence Stroll in his quest to make Aston Martin an ultra-premium luxury brand just like <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/ferrari-nv" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:24708:1">Ferrari NV (RACE IM)</a>.  We will look at the members of the consortium, their track record and assess their contribution to reviving Aston Martin. Aston Martin will publish FY19 results on 27/2. Expect things to get kitchen sinked. Financials will look worse before they start trending up again. We will be watching for the ordering trends of the DBX SUV more than anything else.
