The spread of COVID-19 and, to a lesser degree, the oil price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia overshadowed most other issues in March. These twin shocks are posing unprecedented challenges to the Asian HY market. Against this backdrop, we look at recent developments in China, where the pandemic began and where the economy seems to be returning to normal. We also evaluate the liquidity of each name in our coverage universe, in view of the uncertainties that prevail with respect to the macro and business-specific impact of the current situation. The Asia Monthly focuses on providing updates on recent events, information on new issues and spread movements, as well as summarising our top picks and discussing specific areas of interest in the â€œIn-Focusâ€‌ section. Times China has a simple build-to-sellآ business model, withآ extensive debt-funded expansion. Sales growth and liquidity have beenآ sound. The pace of land acquisitions was moderate in 2019, with a continued focus on the Greater Bay Area. The company has increasingly been using JV structures in property development. Positively, the JV investments finally paid off in 2019. The impact from the COVID-19 outbreak on Times China could be limited in H1/20, mainly driven byآ disruptions toآ construction works in Q1. While the contracted sales growth could be slower, the upward trend should continue on account of the companyâ€™s focus on the Greater Bay Area. Times China's business risk is manageable, due to the limited exposure to Wuhan and the sufficient saleable resources. Liquidity risk is low. The companyâ€™s short-term maturities, including the domestic bonds becoming puttable in 2020, should be adequately covered by cash.
