In this month’s “In-Focus” section, we provide an update to our 2018 analysis of returns and volatility for unrated Chinese issuers. Since our first report, the number of such issuers has increased notably. At the same time, with the Lucror Chinese Industrial index having run since 1 January 2018, we can now better compare the unrated issuers' performance relative to peers. The Asia Monthly focuses on providing updates on recent events, information on new issues and spread movements, as well as summarising our top picks, and discussing specific areas of interest in the “In-Focus” section. The Asia Monthly is intended to broaden investors' understanding of the Asian USD high-yield market.

EV demand is booming with Shanghai's new restriction rules on non-Shanghai number plate cars. It is estimated there's 1.7mn cars in use in Shanghai use non-Shanghai plates, vs. China's EV PV car sales volume was 1.06mn in 2019. We believe Tesla (TSLA.US) and Xiaopeng (XPEV.US) would benefit more than other brands.Overall car demand in China has come in better than expected in first four weeks of October. CPCA data says China's PV retail sales increased by 17% in the first 25 days of October.Reiterate BUY on Geely (0175.HK).

The company has a pipeline of exciting and futuristic product innovation that will keep its existing customers (conventional automakers) happy while also winning more mandates in the EV industry.   
There will be a slight margin decline in the 2H 2020 from the North American customers but the increasing proportion of Chinese customers should help to plug the gap. The company is still trading on the 49% and 48% discount on PER and EV/EBITDA of its customers respectively.

In September, Geely (175.HK)auto sales increased by 11% yoy, within which its Lynk&amp;Co sales grew by 38% yoy. Great Wall (2333.HK) reported an 18% yoy sales growth. Changan Auto (000625.CH) reported a 28.6% yoy sales growth. BYD's (1211.HK) sales growth remained weak at 3.6% yoy.Reiterate BUY on Geely.
