In this month’s “In-Focus” section, we provide an update to our 2018 analysis of returns and volatility for unrated Chinese issuers. Since our first report, the number of such issuers has increased notably. At the same time, with the Lucror Chinese Industrial index having run since 1 January 2018, we can now better compare the unrated issuers' performance relative to peers. The Asia Monthly focuses on providing updates on recent events, information on new issues and spread movements, as well as summarising our top picks, and discussing specific areas of interest in the “In-Focus” section. The Asia Monthly is intended to broaden investors' understanding of the Asian USD high-yield market.

Technical Analysis

While a more cautious outlook is appropriate, as long as $77 holds (the September lows) we are constructive and would be buyers on a pullback. A move below $77 would start to get very concerning, and would leave $75 and the 200-day MA as last-ditch support. Considering the recent pullback we want to be sticking with areas that have continued to outperform in spite of recent broad market weakness. For that we look to the following leadership Sectors: Technology, Consumer Discretionary, Manufacturing, Materials, and Transportation

JSW Steel’s Q2/20-21 results were much better than expected, with a strong rebound in sales volumes, revenue, and profitability. The financial risk profile improved from the dismal level seen in Q1 and liquidity is adequate. In the light of these results, we have revised our FY 2020-21 forecasts upwards to near our original projections, expecting a 16% y-o-y decline in revenue with relatively stable margins. We earlier lowered our expectations after the Q1 results, projecting that revenue would fall 29% (vs. -15% previously), and reducing our margin forecast down 2 ppts.
