Beijing Enterprises Hldgs / Equity Bottom-Up

<p>We maintain our fair value estimate of HKD 58.00 for Beijing Enterprises Holdings, or BEH, following management’s recent business update, which was largely in line with our expectations. We think the proposed acquisition of a 20% stake in a Russian oil and gas company has limited added value, as it offers little in the way of synergies to the company’s existing utility-focused business portfolio, and it increases uncertainty, given the exposure to upstream oil and gas prices and currency risks. We don’t expect the proposed transaction to threaten BEH’s narrow moat, as the transaction accounts for only about 6.5% of its existing assets, and gas transmission and distribution remains its core business. We suspect the move will be unpopular, given the uncertainty over meaningful cash flow contributions.</p><p>Nonetheless, we think BEH is already undervalued, as concerns over potential midstream transmission tariff cuts are fully reflected in the current price level, trading at 8 times 2016 price/earnings, and 0.8 times price/book, compared with 13-15 times price/earnings and 2-3 times price/book for its industry peers.</p><p><em>Analyst: Jennifer Song</em></p>
