*Don’t Be Misled By Better Numbers: Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (1398.HK) [ICBC] reported 4Q20 results of CNY 87.2 bn, increasing CNY 7.3 bn or 9.2% linked quarter. The linked quarter improvement, in our view, can solely be attributed to an unjustified and massive linked quarter reduction in loss provisions of CNY 31.3 bn (57.7%).  In addition, 4Q20 results can be highlighted by ICBC’s negative operating jaws; and *Credit Risk Rising: As ICBC is the benchmark name to which all mainland Chinese banks are measured, an increase of such magnitude is more than alarming – and intimates mainland Chinese bank credit risk is moving in oppositive directions to their counterparts in India. When one considers the current break in credit quality reserves would appear to be incredibly light – in the neighborhood of CNY 410 bn which amounts to over a year of pre-tax results at ICBC.

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China – Troubling Result

*4Q20 Results In Line:Tencent Holdings’ (700.HK) [Tencent] 4Q20 results were basically in line with consensus, with total revenues coming in at CNY 133.7 bn, increasing 7% linked quarter.  Non-GAAP operating profit amounted to CNY 38.1bn, flattish on a linked quarter basis; and *Elephant In The Room: According to Bloomberg, Tencent likely will be required to create a financial holding company for all of its banking, insurance, and payment services businesses – and be regulated along the lines of the banking sector. For Tencent, WeChat Pay and the broader lending/deposit taking business are likely to be reined-in.

*US Greensill Arm Declares BK: On March 25, 2021, Greensill filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for its US subsidiary, Greensill Capital Inc. (GCI), in the Southern District of New York. GCI sold Greensill products in the US with revenue passing directly through to the Greensill in London; and*Watch Your Risk: Greensill allegedly has USD 5 bn in risk outstanding to GFG Alliance Group (GFG) – a company owned by Sanjeev Gupta, who appears to be at the center of this entire debacle. Credit Suisse, GAM Holdings (GAM.VX), Tokio Marine Holdings (8766.JP), SoftBank Group (9984.JP) amongst many others are likely to be further impacted given the growing uncertainties of Greensill and GFG Alliance.

Excluding the impact of the 2019 tax refund of CNY 5.2 bn, China Life’s bottom-line performance would have declined only CNY 2.8 bn or 5.3% YOY – but still down; and*Value Challenges Ahead: With value challenges ahead in China Life’s illiquid securities portfolio (Challenged Tier 2/3 bank negotiable CDs and alternatives) and the CBIRC’s enabling of insurers to increase their concentration in equities, we not only question solvency margins but the viability of China Life’s full-year dividend per share – not to mention the impact of lower net yields.

ZhongAn Online P&C Insurance C / Equity Bottom-Up

*First Year Of Profitability: ZhongAn Online P&amp;C Insurance (6060.HK) [ZhongAn] reported full year 2020 bottom-line results of CNY 554 mn, an increase of CNY 1.0 bn over losses of CNY 454 mn in 2019. Much of the turnaround in what amounts to ZhongAn’s first year of profitability can be attributed to the YOY volume growth in net earned premium of CNY 3.4 bn (26.7%) to CNY 16.7 bn; and *Credit Insurance &amp; Investment Concerns: The YOY combined ratio improvement of 10.8% to 102.5%, in pur view, is due largely to the improvement in credit insurance whose loss ratio declined from 97% in 2019 to 63%. We have a difficult time believing that little old ZhongAn has figured out the secret sauce to credit insurance risk. With value challenges ahead in ZhongAn’s illiquid securities portfolio (Challenged Tier 2/3 bank negotiable CDs and alternatives) and the CBIRC’s enabling of insurers to increase their concentration in equities, we question solvency margins and future ZhongAn dividends.
