Nippon Steel Placement: Fundamentals Improving but Nothing Too Exciting

At 5pm JST on 13 Oct Kobe Steel held a meeting to disclose further details regarding newly discovered "improper conduct". The news was related to its core steel division and news regarding the meeting and potential contagion of the steel segment caused the stock to drop a further 8.8% during the day, on top of the 35.6% fall over the previous two days. The meeting proved to be a rather emotional affair with a journalist repeatedly interrupting the CEO's speech to demand that the company cease using euphemisms and describe the conduct as lying to their customers. The list of companies affected has grown to 500, from an initial estimate of 200, with foreign subsidiaries also revealed to have skipped various inspections and rewritten specifications.We examine the shipment values of the products impacted by Kobe Steel's data falsification scandal below and further consider potential asset sale scenarios.
