He graduated with a degree in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia in 1980 and obtained his CFA Charter in 1989.

During past major market bottoms, the outperformance of small-cap stocks has coincided with economic rebounds. The relative returns of small and microcaps have broken a relative downtrend and appear to be trying to bottom, it’s time to check in on how these stocks are doing.One way to monitor the progress of these stocks is to check on the health of small businesses. Small businesses are the backbone of the economy. According to the Small Business Administration, U.S. small businesses provide 47% of private sector employment. Equally important to the check-up is the poor bargaining power of small firms, as they act as a sensitive barometer of economic health.Our bottom-up review of small business conditions shows a mixed bag. The jury is still out from a bottom-up analysis of the small business outlook. However, a separate real-time cross-asset analysis suggests that the prognosis is not encouraging.
