The Case for Growth in Minor Bulks From EVs (Initial Study & Workbook in Bulk Shipping)

Chinese commercial fleets feature characteristics that will make the mass adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) surprisingly rapid -- provided the right incentives are put in place. Similarly, certain commercial users in China will also likely be aggressive adopters of autonomous vehicles (AVs), though this technology merely represents an extension of an established trend toward automation that already exists in several points along the supply chain. Widespread adoption of AVs for use on public roads will of course require legal changes, however, and the market for commercial EVs is likely to emerge sooner than that for mainstream commercial AVs.In this note we attempt to define the market opportunity for commercial EVs and commercial AVs in China. We also identify the sub-segments where mass adoption of commercial EVs and commercial AVs is likely to arrive soonest, and which sub-segments will likely see only negligible adoption rates in the medium-term. Finally, we list the types of companies set to benefit the most from rising adoption of commercial EVs and commercial AVs in China (and those which may be hurt by these trends).In two subsequent notes in coming weeks we will attempt to identify specific investment ideas related to these themes, including companies beyond the obvious beneficiaries, ie, those which can benefit indirectly -- but materially -- from the widespread adoption of commercial EVs and greater use of commercial AVs.
