Last evening, the Hang Seng Indexes Company announced the launch of the Hang Seng TECH Index on 27 July. The new index will track the 30 largest technology companies listed in Hong Kong.The index universe covers Hong Kong-listed companies that have high business exposure to selected technology themes, including internet, fintech, cloud, e-commerce and digital activities. Eligible candidates are further screened by whether they operate via a technology-enabled platform, their research and development expenses to revenue ratio, and their revenue growth. After this screening, the top 30 stocks in terms of market capitalisation are selected as index constituents.Given the investor focus on technology names and the outperformance over the last few months and years, it is only a matter of time before ETFs and derivatives that track the new index are launched further driving up valuations and liquidity.The rise in liquidity on the index stocks and the launch of ETFs and derivatives will be a positive for <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hong-kong-exchanges-clearing" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:490:1" rel="noopener">HKEX (388 HK)</a>.
