MediaTek announced yesterday its plan to bring a fully integrated system solution (by integrating multimedia, 4G/3G/2G/WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity, ADAS, and millimeter wave radar) to the autonomous vehicle industry beginning 1Q17.</li><li>A natural move to infotainment and automotive IoT: For in-vehicle infotainment, we see this is a natural migration for MediaTek as its lead in multimedia turnkey solution. For automotive IoT, MediaTek is one of two that can provide integrated low power 5G/4G/3G, WiFi, and BT for autonomous cars to downlink the laws and map-based applications.</li><li>Years behind on ADAS: We believe MediaTek still 2-3 years behind competitors on ADAS and even automated driving system on safety, graphic processing, and deep learning capabilities. We expect only a simple version of ADAS product for China automotive industry to be introduced in 2H17 but should improve year over year.</li><li>MediaTek is choosing mm-Wave Radar instead of LiDAR: We earlier thought LiDAR should be widely used in SAE 3, 4, 5 systems. But, Tesla, MediaTek, and NXP choose Radar on better collecting bouncing data and to penetrate rain, fog, dust, and snow.</li><li>Still more headwinds for a short-term: MediaTek will still face some challenges like lack of Cat. 7 modem, margin pressure on 7-15% q/q sales decline in 4Q16, mature global smartphone market, one of the key customers LeMall in financial difficulty, and likely rising short-term R&amp;D expenses for automotive IC development.</li><li>Taking years to benefit from the robust driver: MediaTek is aiming to gain 20-30% of global automotive industry market shares by 2020-2025 with a much higher ASP of over US$100 per solution (estimated) vs. US$10 per smartphone SoC. TSMC Co-CEO Mark Liu earlier commented a 5-year technology migration driving automotive semi industry like full automatic parking, multiple displays with augmented reality, autonomous driving, 25x computing power increase to 10 TFLOPS GPU, and 4x increase to 40 sensors.</li></ul>
