We also recap our earlier ideas and recommend exiting a few positions, especially where there are gains and the price ratios are at turning points.</p></div><div>
<p>These are all large cap financials that trade in excess of US$20m a day, so implementing the strategy should be possible using stock borrow or single stock futures.</p>

<p>We initiate our coverage of Asian social bonds with a thematic report on (1) the current stage in the Asian capital markets, (2) social bond compliance regime, and (3) recent issuance in Asia. In subsequent months, we aim to launch a request for comment for our framework we will use to analyze social bond compliance with the Social Bond Principles (SBP).</p>
<p>This report also includes the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and how SDG is linked to ESG (Environment, Social Development, and Governance) investments. SDG is not simply Environment, Social Development, and Governance but also Productivity which results in employment, economic growth, innovation, better infrastructure, and stronger industry.</p>
<p>Among ESG, Governance is what we have already accounted for when analyzing credit investments. That said, the key is how we can now design investments to improve environment (i.e. green bonds), social development (i.e. social bonds), and/or both green and social bonds (i.e. sustainability bonds). </p>
<p>Green bonds were the first among fixed income instruments to take off. <p><strong><em>*Weak 4Q20 Bottom-Line:</em></strong> China Merchants Bank (3968.HK) [CMB] pre-announced a poor set of 4Q20 results. On March 19, 2020, the finals were disclosed and the results were even uglier than anticipated. While its true that net profit declined CNY 6.1 bn (22.7%) on a linked quarter basis to CNY 20.9 bn –despite having its tax rate decline 790 bp to 15.6% over the period, core operating results came in at just CNY 13.9 bn – declining CNY 9.3 bn or 40.0% linked quarter;  and </p><p><strong><em>*Best Retail Franchise Hitting Credit Wall:</em></strong> While CMB has the best retail franchise in mainland China, credit risk has substantially increased in 4Q20. More worrisome is the net new NPL increase of CNY 14.8 bn, representing an annualized increase in net new NPLs of 104.7%. Provided (and its not a stretch) that the net new NPL ratio trajectory holds, reserve cover of NPLs will drop to 213% - suggesting even the mighty are falling. </p>

Hang Seng China Enterprises Index / Index Rebalance

<p>Last evening, Hang Seng Indexes announced the conclusions of the market consultation on the "Proposal to enhance the Hang Seng Index as regards continuing to serve as the most representative and important benchmark of the Hong Kong stock market".</p><p>Apart from the changes to the <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hong-kong-hang-seng-index" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:22899:1" rel="noopener">Hong Kong Hang Seng Index (HSI INDEX)</a>, it was also decided that the weight of all <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hang-seng-china-enterprises-index" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:22900:1" rel="noopener">Hang Seng China Enterprises Index (HSCEI INDEX)</a> constituents, including Secondary Listings and WVR Securities, would be capped at 8%. While this was not a part of the market consultation, we had highlighted this as a possibility in our earlier <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/insights/hscei-dividends-structural-sell-bank-dividends-the-swing-factor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Insight</a>.</p><p>Post the 2 inclusions and 4 deletions in the March review, we see a further 3 potential changes at the June review.</p><p>The big impact of the 8% cap on index constituents will be felt on the HSCEI dividend futures market. With a bulk of the 2021 dividends scheduled to go ex after the implementation of the rebalance, the dividend futures should move lower. The HSCEI 2021/22 dividend steepener should trade less negative than where it has been trading prior to the announcement.</p><p>In this Insight, we look at the potential changes and their impact on the stocks and the dividend futures.</p><div class="content-highlight"><p><em>This Insight is marked Bearish since we expect the HSCEI 2021 dividend futures to move lower.</em></p></div>
