While 2020 began on an optimistic note, sentiment has changed significantly with the outbreak of the COVID-19 coronavirus, which has spread rapidly across continents.آ  In our view, key concerns include: [1] potential demand impact on industries with significant human interaction; [2] potential impact on the economy if consumer sentiment deteriorates materially; [3] potential impact on labour force productivity; [4] potential impact on the supply chains of industries; and [5] potential impact on financial markets. We are cautious on companies which are highly levered, cyclical, have limited liquidity or significant debt maturities in the near term. In the report, we assess the impact of COVID-19 on: [1] Europe, China/Asia and the Americas; [2] supply chains; and [3] the sectors and companies under our coverage.

Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone / Credit

We view Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ)آ as â€œLow Riskâ€‌ on the LARA scale. This is supported by the companyâ€™s: (1) established position as the largest independent port operator in India; (2) diversification in terms of cargo type and business segments; and (3) relatively stable margins and financial metrics.آ The main risk revolves around its related-party transactions, albeit these have decreased. Our fundamental Credit Bias on APSEZ is â€œStableâ€‌.آ The Portsآ business generates stable earnings and cash flow, which would help fund part of the companyâ€™s sizeable capex and acquisition plans. That said, we view negatively the increasingly aggressive shareholder distributions.آ  We view APSEZ as â€œWeakâ€‌ on the LAGA scale. The company is effectively controlled by founder and Chairman Gautam Adani and his family. It also has a history of related party transactions. That said, major businesses within the Adani Group are listed, which improves corporate transparency.
