Management will give FY21 guidance in January but sounded upbeat on its prospects going into FY21.</p><p>AEM has hired an entire new CEO/CFO/CTO suite over the past 18 months. We believe this highly qualified new C-suit would not have joined AEM if they did not see a clear path of making AEM into a 1 billion USD company going forward. </p><p>YTD the share price of AEM is up by 75% but has come off its earlier highs. Given FY21 guidance uncertainty and muted consensus expectations (2% revenue growth in FY21 and -1% growth in FY22) we like the risk/reward set-up. The downside is protected by <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/aem-holdings-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:11019:1" rel="noopener">AEM Holdings (AEM SP)</a> becoming a takeover target itself at some point but not before the maximum value has been extracted by the current management team.</p><p>Fair Value of 5 SGD remains (this is based on 10x 2020 EV/EBITDA or 14.7x 2020 P/E). Peers trade at an average of 26.1x 2020 P/E and 16.9x 2020 EV/EBITDA.</p>

<p>The Trump administration is considering whether or not to add Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC, 981 HK) to the Commerce Department's "Entity List" - the same mechanism that was used to restrict the export of American technology to Huawei. </p><p>This would cause SMIC a great deal of inconvenience and further undercut American semiconductor production equipment (SPE) sales to China. A sword is hanging over the share prices of SMIC itself and leading American SPE makers including Applied Materials (AMAT), Lam Research (LRCX) and KLA (KLAC). </p><p>Another act of economic war intended to cripple China's high-tech industries, it would also convince the Chinese government - if any further convincing is necessary - that eliminating dependence on American technology is an absolute necessity.</p><p>Some form of retaliation also seems likely. Has anyone calculated the valuations of American listed companies assuming no further growth in sales in China, declining sales in China, or no sales in China at all? Not only high-tech is at risk.</p><p>Potential beneficiaries include Japanese and European SPE makers including Tokyo Electron (8035 JP), Lasertec (6920 JP), Screen Holdings (7735 JP) and ASM International (ASM). American commentators have claimed that semiconductors cannot be produced without American technology, but that is not true.</p><p>Nevertheless, the immediate concern is the impact of the U.S-China trade war on semiconductor capital spending, which in the short to medium term at least is negative for all concerned.</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><br><br></p>
