Our process begins by organizing the universe of actively traded stocks into discrete sectors, then into industry groups. We then apply our technical and quantitative tools to identify developing price trends. Once attractive trends are identified within a selected sector or group, we screen for individual stocks which we believe offer the best risk/reward profile. We provide a historical perspective that often reveals, through our long-term charts, how price patterns often repeat themselves over time.

Technical Analysis

Yesterday’s break below 3425 short-term support in the S&amp;P 500 opens the door for potential visits to 3325 and 3200, two important support levels we are watching moving forward. With that said, as long as 3200 holds (the September lows) we are constructive and would be buyers on a pullback. At the same time, small-caps are providing a risk-on signal with the Russell 2000 (IWM) still holding above $159 short-term support. Leadership from small-caps is something we would expect to see in a broad-based bull market, and if IWM is above $159 it is hard to get too bearish overall.

U. S. Equity Strategy: Upgrading Utilities; Downgrading Communications

The S&amp;P 500 made a new all-time closing high following the largely as-expected U.S.-China trade cease-fire agreement, but it did so unconvincingly. We would not call it a breakout as the market closed well off of the opening highs and not one cyclical Sector is decisively in new high territory. Overall, the market is sending mixed signals. Barring additional positive developments we believe upside is likely to be muted from here. In today’s report we highlight attractive Groups and stocks within Health Care, Services, and Technology: Diagnostic Imaging, Construction &amp; Engineering, Large-Cap, and Solar Energy.

Short-term rotation is underway. FANG stocks and parts of Tech, both long-term leaders, have become a short-term source of funds. Fortunately, this weakness is confined, resulting in sector and group rotation, not widespread selling. There is still plenty to like about this market, including areas we have shied away from for most of the year, such as energy and retailers.  This report highlights investment opportunities within the energy sector.
