*Many Moving Parts: Ping An Bank (000001.CH) [PAB], the Ping An Insurance (2318.HK) [Ping An] banking subsidiary, remains challenged. For 1Q21, PAB reported results of CNY 10.1 bn – increasing CNY 3.6 bn (55.2%) on a linked quarter basis. Revenues, however, did increase CNY 4.8 bn (13.0%), much of which, in our view, can likely be attributed to gains while operating expenses contracted CNY 802 mn or 6.2% over the period; and*Credit Seeing Improvement: By our analysis, we find that credit weakness continues to occur as net new NPLs have increased CNY 4.2 bn or 53.6% on an annualized basis. In fairness, however, this is far better than the CNY 20.5 bn or a massive 241% (223% in 3Q20) increase on an annualized basis. Assuming the credit break in the PAB portfolio continues to remain at the current improved level, we find that PAB’s reserves still remain quite light by CNY 19 bn if we assume a 2x NPL ratio. This shortfall represents 6% of stated equity.

*Stake Purchase In Mainland Bank: DBS Group Holdings (DBS.SP) [DBS] for the second time in five months announced a transaction. The latest being its intention to acquire a 13% stake in the privately-held Shenzhen Rural Commercial Bank (SRCB) for CNY 5.29 bn (USD 814.3 mn), in a move that will accelerate its Greater Bay Area expansion strategy;*Very Expensive Transaction: DBS did disclose that this stake will be priced at a stated P/BV of 1.01x. By our calculation, the post-money P/BV amounts to 0.92x – which is still 41.5% (USD 338 mn) higher than the average valuation (0.65x P/BV) for a mainland Chinese bank; and*Deal Distractions Mount: On November 17, 2020, the RBI also announced a draft scheme to merge LVB with DBS Bank India Limited, the 100%-owned subsidiary of DBS Bank Holdings (DBS.SP), which will infuse INR 25 bn into its subsidiary to absorb and recapitalize LVB. While SRCB dos not appear to be riddled with problems the way LVB is, no doubt there will be issues to contend with.  DBS apparently isn’t done with its shopping spree, being in the running for parts of Citigroup's (C.US) consumer business in Asia. Frankly, DBS needs to focus on improving its own legacy issues before it starts both taking on that of other financial institutions.

Executive Summary: The narrative has changed and there is little to stand in the way of further Treasury market strength near term. This should lead to US dollar weakness and may be Emerging Market risk asset supportive. Nonetheless, we suspect that Asia will remain driven by concerns that China is tightening which could constrain investor sentiment in this market.Trading volume-, Treasury issuance- and economic data-risks were no match for short-position unwinding, data reappraisal, and Japanese investor re-entry into the Treasury bond market over the last week. Treasury yields continued their retracement, posting their biggest weekly rally since August. Furthermore, after the worst quarter since 1980, Treasuries have gained around 1% this month, paring 2021 losses to about 3.3%. We may have seen a sell-the-rumor, buy-the-fact market event occur with respect to Treasuries and the better-than-expected March economic data set.The narrative has changed to one that is Treasury bond supportive. Fixed income markets are discounting lower economic growth and price expectations. Scenarios with a declining growth rate may be increasingly discounted in the Treasury markets. With GDP growth anticipated to tail-off over the next few quarters, sustainable wage growth may not materialize. Meanwhile, supply chain bottlenecks and rising producer prices may negatively impact corporate margins rather than consumer wallets. We elaborate on each of these themes within.Against this backdrop, there are limited economic announcements which could impact the Treasury market over the next few weeks. Meanwhile, Japanese investors may find buying US$ denominated bonds attractive after hedging the currency risk. This may be risk asset supportive going forward.  We review this inside.In the bank credit markets, March’s carry trade outperformance continued to unwind as shorter-duration bonds outperformed during the week. All recent higher coupon outperformers experienced large spread declines. Even the Turkish bank credit curve behaved in a manner consistent with other bonds globally, rather than trade at a discount. We identify the winners and losers.In China, while the immediate threat of Credit Armageddon may be lower, the ultimate game plan for China Huarong Asset Management is yet to be known. As such, the market may remain skittish while trading opportunities remain amongst the other asset management companies. Middle East- and Asia-headquartered banks may lead the headlines next week. Amongst major European names, only Credit Suisse is scheduled to provide final Q1 results on Tuesday, 20 April. Bank Credit Weekly: Narrative Change Pushes Carry-Trade Unwind as Treasuries Rally

Bank Of Ningbo Co Ltd A / Equity Bottom-Up

*Despite Cost Growth, Bank of Ningbo Pulls One Out: Bank of Ningbo (002142.CH) [Ningbo] reported 4Q20 bottom-line results of CNY 3.8 bn, increasing CNY 304 mn or 8.8% linked quarter. The linked quarter results improvement at Ningbo was driven by several factors: a) revenue improvement of CNY 571 mn (5.6%) and likely driven by loan growth of CNY 32.4 bn (5.0%); b) a CNY 752 mn (31.5%) reduction in loss provisioning; and c) a 6.3% reduction in Ningbo’s tax rate to 7.3%; and*Credit On Solid Footing: Despite the continued accelerated level of net new NPL growth at 83.4% on an annualized, Ninbo has a low base of NPLs.  It’s a good thing that Ningbo remains well-reserved and that credit risk appears quite manageable because capital levels remain somewhat challenged with a CET1 of just 9.5%.

Concerned about weakening organic growth, AIA has gone on a deal-making spree: Bank of East Asia’s (23.HK) [BEA] wholly-owned life insurance unit, BEA Life; an exclusive 15-year bancassurance relationship with BEA; acquisition of Blue Cross (Asia-Pacific) Insurance’s underwritten closed life insurance; a strategic digital partnership with ZhongAn Online P&amp;C Insurance’ (6060.HK) [ZhongAn]; and and received CBIRC approval to restructure its Shanghai-based life insurance branch into a wholly-owned subsidiary; and  *Risks Of Aggressive Mainland Push: In addition to the massive managerial distractions with so many deals at one time, there are negative tax implications for mainland Chinese subsidiaries versus branches; challenges of bogusly rated AAA mainland Chinese bonds; no end in sight with its flailing Hong Kong flagship; getting the BEA Life team on the same with AIA Hong Kong; and potential impairments its USD-based investment portfolio.
