<p><strong><em>*Yongcheng Coal Default: </em></strong>According to Shanghai Clearing House, Yongcheng Coal and Electricity (YCE) in Henan Province failed to repay a CNY 1 bn (USD 151 mn) short-term bond despite being given the highest rating by one of mainland China’s awful domestic credit ratings agencies; and</p><p><strong><em>*Watch Your Banks: </em></strong>The yield on benchmark five-year “AAA” rated mainland Chinese corporates was 3.99% - up over 100 bp from their April 2020 low. Investor flight is pushing financing costs higher and squeezing local corporate funding in a market which is just barely recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Concerns remain over higher problem loans as debt service risk is heightened over higher rates, unreliable financial statements and ratings agency reports, and now an inability to refinance public debt with a number of bond sales being canceled. Further, the degradation of corporate bond values is limiting their usage as collateral.</p>

<p>The first sector discussed is <strong>Consumer</strong>, where H/A spreads narrowed on average 1.4% for the week, after running 0.6% wider the previous week. The Tsingtao spread remains 4% wider through four weeks but is now at 33%. Performance was volatile in the cluster on the week, but on average the liquid Hs in the cluster are up 19% in 4 weeks and 27% since the start of the Golden Week holiday. </p>

We provide research and consultancy on Asian banks. Our focus is on what we call “Asian bank research, without the noise.” We are interested in the most critical swing-factors for banks, the NPL and credit cycle, and where we believe there is a gap between perception and reality. We often focus on the less studied components of bank financial statements.  Our research is highly thematic, sometimes examining unlisted banks and companies as a window on mainstream banks. 

Being independent allows us to look at smaller banks, often overlooked by others. Analysis of BIS bank guidelines in the context of Asia, is also a focal point, while we also analyze global banks operating in the region. We use what we believe is the most comprehensive, reliable financials database, SNL Financial. S&P Capital IQ augments our database, with corporate data and CEIC, with economics.

<p>There are few banks that compare to those in China on controlling costs. This will likely be the way forward for others in Asia and globally. Where some have seen costs/assets down considerably and to low levels in any context, others have more room to cut. Of the largest banks by assets, <strong><a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/postal-savings-bank-of-china" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:22848:1" rel="noopener">Postal Savings Bank of China (1658 HK)</a></strong>,<strong><a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/china-merchants-bank-co-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:714:1" rel="noopener">China Merchants Bank A (600036 CH)</a></strong>and <strong><a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/ping-an-bank-co-ltd-a" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:681:1" rel="noopener">Ping An Bank Co Ltd A (000001 CH)</a></strong> have seen the least improvement in costs/assets over the past nine years – and where this ratio remains high compared with peers. </p>
