</div><p><strong>RESILIENCE</strong> - Japanese equities have risen by 2.9% since the low of 4th June. In US dollar terms, the gain is 3.7%. Over the last two weeks, the gains are 0.7% and 1.6%, respectively. For the previous twelve months, the equity market has moved in almost perfect 'sync' with the US dollar/Japanese Yen exchange rate. This month's divergence is unusual, and it remains to be seen when, how, and if the gap will be closed. The cross rate is within ¥2.6 of the high points of the last two years. 🇯🇵 JAPAN • Market Update - Resilience

</div><p><strong>INAUSPICIOUS</strong> - Since the beginning of the Reiwa era (令和時代), Japanese equities have fallen by 6.1% and have seen only six 'up' days out of the nineteen trading days so far. The strength of the Yen has cut that decline to -3.2% for the minority of foreign investors that are unhedged. The Bank of Japan has purchased ETFs on ten days in the new era including on each of the last three trading sessions - the largest such intervention this calendar year.  Having reached a new five-month low, a decisive low above that of December 25th is required. The market took only two trading days to descend from the current level to that 2018 low, and a fall of 6.7% from Friday's close would breach that level. The one-year rate of change has been the key driver of the Japanese earnings cycle and, in turn, the market. <p style="text-align: center;"><strong>- RELATIVE PRICE SCORE - </strong></p><p>The Relative Price Score (RPS) is a measure of stock price performance relative to TOPIX calculated by comparing the current deviation with the mean absolute deviation of monthly and daily relative share prices. As all companies are put on a comparable scale, 'Overbought' and 'Oversold' outliers and changes in scoring can reveal short-term and longer-term trading opportunities. Company data is cap-weight-aggregated into 328 Peer Group and 30 Sector Relative Price Scores. Outlier thresholds are set at<strong> +4</strong> &amp; <strong>-2</strong> for <strong>Companies</strong>, <strong>+3</strong> &amp; <strong>-1.5</strong> for <strong>Peer Groups</strong> and <strong>+2</strong> and <strong>-1</strong> for<strong> Sectors</strong>. We attribute some of the market's distortions to the Bank of Japan's market activities and the increase in algorithmic trading. Whatever the cause, repeating the 2000 tech bubble playbook is unlikely to end well. </p><figure class="editor-figure mceNonEditable"><img src="https://static-prod.smartkarma.com/images/media/000/083/924/original/2019-04-03_12-13-50.png?1554261675" class="editor-image img-responsive" data-smartkarma-image-id="83924"></figure><div class="content-caption">Source: Japan Analytics</div><p><strong>NEGATIVE 'SPREAD'</strong> - On a daily closing basis, the Oversold outlier percentage is currently 3.17%, the highest since December 25th 2018, despite the total market value being 14% higher than on that day. The 'spread' between Overbought and Oversold outliers is now -1.10, and has only been wider for three days at the end of last year either side of Christmas Day. Nevertheless, the Overbought percentage reached a new fifteen-year high at the end of March despite the total market value being 12.6% below the peak of January 2018. Both monthly and daily indicators have large negative 'spreads' and are unlikely to generate 'buy' signals for some time. We analyse the sale of a stake in the Mako gas field in Indonesia to Coro Energy PLC (CORO LN) by West Natuna Exploration Limited, majority owned by private Singapore company Conrad Petroleum and UK listed Empyrean Energy PLC (EME LN), which has a 10% stake. It has implications in terms of read-through valuations for other S.E. Asia focused energy companies especially those with Indonesian gas production such as Premier Oil PLC (PMO LN), Ophir Energy (OPHR LN) and Medco Energi Internasional T (MEDC IJ). 

Indonesia Upstream Gas Asset Sale: Positive Read-Through to Other SE Asia Gas Companies

<p>We think the market is underestimating global LNG supply in the early to mid-2020s from current facilities: initially we look at Australia, which became the world’s largest LNG exporter on a monthly basis in November (~80mtpa or 25% of global supply). Our analysis of Australian LNG supply suggests that production in the early to mid-2020s will be much higher than market expectations of falling production, as fields move into decline. Overall we think this is negative longer-term for the LNG market as supply could supply to the upside but it is a relative positive for the Australian LNG companies. </p><p>We think production could grow to around 95mtpa by the mid-2020s due to substantial upside to the nameplate capacity on existing facilities, tie-backs and new developments keeping existing facilities full and utilizing new brownfield LNG trains. Australia’s key advantages versus LNG projects elsewhere are the low offshore upstream operating costs, cheap shipping costs to Asia, an investor friendly environment and having a huge installed base of LNG infrastructure and associated cashflows.</p><p>Relative to its size <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/177" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:177:1">Woodside Petroleum (WPL AU)</a> should be the biggest beneficiary and it is also positive for <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/20665" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:20665:1">Inpex Corp (1605 JP)</a> and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/711" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:711:1">Santos Ltd (STO AU)</a> . It is also good news for the larger integrated players such as <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/11091" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:11091:1">Chevron Corp (CVX US)</a>, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/813" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:813:1">Total Sa Spon Adr (TOT US)</a> and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/22108" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:22108:1">Royal Dutch Shell (RDSA LN)</a>.
