<p>Our recent policy work on Japanese structural reform has compelled us to examine contemporary issues surrounding corporate governance in the APEC region. We maintain that corporate governance remains one of the pivotal areas of structural reform in Japan that can assist in breaking down Japan’s “lost decades” dynamics.</p><p>In this piece, we outline the regional debate as pertains to existing Japanese corporate governance standards, and ongoing reforms.  We argue that there might be a middle-ground between Japan's existing corporate governance framework and a US-style model of near-complete shareholder primacy.</p>
