IKang Healthcare Group (ADR) / Event-Driven

<a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/741" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:741:1">iKang Healthcare Group (ADR) (KANG US)</a> recently reported its Q4FY2016 (March 2017) results. The underlying trends were stable (unit growth strong, pricing stable, days receivable improving). Margins deteriorated Y/Y because of the rapid pace of unit openings, but should improve as the pace of openings decelerates. Management provided no new comments on the proposed privatization. We continue to think that trailing EBITDA of US$53 million supports a buyout price of US$14-18/share. Doubts about the deal have driven the share price to roughly US$12 (19x trailing EBITDA), but the shares have further downside if the offer collapses.

This week the Macau government proposed to the Second Standing Committee of Macau Legislative Assembly to allow smoking only in smoking lounges in casinos effective on Jan. 1, 2019, one year later than our existing expectation. Our current forecasts across our narrow moat coverage universe already factor in a negative mid-single-digit percentage point impact to VIP play in 2018, and postponing that one year is not expected to have any significant impact to our fair value estimates. Therefore, under the proposed bill newer casinos will be able to establish smoking lounges in VIP gaming areas, while the older casinos will lose the smoking premium mass and VIP smoking area.
