Internet of Things will change the world. This is Part 2, focusing on the strong market size growth of IoT market in Korea in 2015. We also highlight LG Uplus’ (one of three major telcos in Korea) strong progress in gaining IoT based subscribers in the past six months.The IoT market in Korea reached 4.8 trillion won in 2015, up 28% YoY(Source: Korea Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning) Of the 4.8 trillion won in market size, exports were 1.3 trillion won, up 130% YoY, driven by strong sales of IoT related equipment. Domestic IoT sales were 3.5 trillion won in 2015, up 11% YoY.LG UPlus achieved its first 100k subscribers for its home IoT service, which was achieved in only six months after the initial launch of the service in July 2015.Saving money, improved security, and convenience are currently three major reasons why consumers are becoming subscribers of home IoT services. For LG UPlus, IoT Plug and Opening-Closing Sensor are the two most popular services for home IoT. About half of LG UPlus’ home IoT subscribers use IoT Plug service and 46% use the Opening Closing Sensor service.The trends that are developing in home IoT markets in Korea are well worth following since they are often leading trends for the rest of Asia.

Korea is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, especially in Internet and technology. Our aim is to conduct a deep-dive, bottom-up analysis of the IoT sector in Korea so that it could help the investors to realize the sales and earnings contribution potential of the IoT business to the Korean companies’ top-line and bottom growth.Who are the patent leaders of IoT in Korea? Some of the leaders in the IoT sector have tried to enlarge the competitive barriers by their patents. In fact, a few of the Korean companies are global leaders in claiming the most number of patents in the IoT. We believe that reviewing the major leaders of the patent leaders of the IoT is one of the first steps towards figuring out who could be the major beneficiaries of the growth of IoT in Korea. Three companies in Korea particular, including LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, and KT Corp currently stand out in Korea as having the most number of patents related to IoT. LG Electronics has the largest number of IoT related patents in Korea and among the top five globally. LG Electronics owned 139 IoT patents as of 2014.
