We provide research and consultancy on Asian banks. Our focus is on what we call “Asian bank research, without the noise.” We are interested in the most critical swing-factors for banks, the NPL and credit cycle, and where we believe there is a gap between perception and reality. We often focus on the less studied components of bank financial statements.  Our research is highly thematic, sometimes examining unlisted banks and companies as a window on mainstream banks. 

Being independent allows us to look at smaller banks, often overlooked by others. Analysis of BIS bank guidelines in the context of Asia, is also a focal point, while we also analyze global banks operating in the region. We use what we believe is the most comprehensive, reliable financials database, SNL Financial. S&P Capital IQ augments our database, with corporate data and CEIC, with economics.

<p>New economic growth data in Japan was a surprise to the government. As a result of stronger household consumption, government consumption and exports, the latest quarter GDP was revised upward slightly. Recovery and better than expectations continues to driver our global bank view. Banks with the highest credit costs or delta in credit costs during the current year, may have the most to gain. And with economic relief packages still firmly in place, the impact can be even more profound on bank profit. </p>

As all companies are put on a comparable scale, 'Overbought' and 'Oversold' outliers and short-term changes in scoring can reveal attractive trading opportunities. Company outlier thresholds are set at +4 &amp; -2 and equate to the top and bottom first-to-second percentiles of historical observations from which mean reversion takes a matter of months. </p>

As all companies are put on a comparable scale, <strong>'Overbought'</strong> and<strong> 'Oversold'</strong> outliers and short-term changes in scoring can reveal attractive trading opportunities.</p><div>
<p>The data for all <strong>3,860</strong><strong>Companies</strong> is cap-weight-aggregated into Relative Price Scores for our <strong>328</strong><strong>Peer Groups</strong> and <strong>30 Sectors</strong>. The Overbought and Oversold outlier 'thresholds are set' at +4 &amp; -2 for Companies, +3 &amp; -1.5 for Peer Groups and +2 and -1 for Sectors, respectively. These thresholds equate with the top and bottom percentiles of historical observations.</p>
<p>With a few exceptions, mean reversion from these extreme outlying states occurs typically in a matter of weeks or months. It often coincides with the peak of market interest in a theme or investment fashion.</p>

<p><strong>RPS STATISTICS</strong> - The Company 'outlier' thresholds are set to "+4" for overbought and "-2" for oversold.  Currently, of the 3,686 listed companies for which monthly data is available, 91 companies are 'Overbought', and 120 are 'Oversold' - 2.5% and 3.2%, respectively of the total. For companies with a market capitalisation of over ¥100b, there are 35 'Overbought' and 24 'Oversold' companies. </p>
<p><strong>RPS 'TOPS'</strong> - In the last two years, 445 companies have achieved an RPS of '4' or more. 80% have seen their RPS fall to below '4' within the following two months. For companies with a market capitalisation higher than ¥100b, the numbers are 95 companies and 63% - demonstrating the superior persistence of large capitalisation companies in this regard.
