Our unique research methodology, centered on relative strength, enables our strategists to deliver superior investment recommendations.

Our process begins by organizing the universe of actively traded stocks into discrete sectors, then into industry groups. We then apply our technical and quantitative tools to identify developing price trends. Once attractive trends are identified within a selected sector or group, we screen for individual stocks which we believe offer the best risk/reward profile. We provide a historical perspective that often reveals, through our long-term charts, how price patterns often repeat themselves over time.

Technical Analysis

Shanghai Shenzhen CSI 300 Index / Technical Analysis

Global equities (MSCI ACWI, ACWI ex-US, and EAFE) remain bullish with their uptrends intact, and the MSCI Emerging Markets index continues to hold above major support at $52 on the EEM-US. Additionally, Europe’s STOXX 50 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng are on the cusp of short-term breakouts, while the major indexes in China (Shanghai Composite &amp; CSI 300) are currently breaking above short-term resistance... see chart below. Considering the absence of breakdowns and the fact that market dynamics remain largely positive, our overall constructive outlook remains appropriate.

Shenzhen Stock Exchange Composite Index / Technical Analysis

China (MSCI China, Shenzhen A Share) offers a plethora of attractive setups and is a major focus in today’s report. Taiwan (TAIEX) is another focus as it is one of the few global indexes that is not yet breaking down. Lastly, Turkey (ISE National 100) appears to offer an attractive pullback opportunity. Within EM, we highlight attractive opportunities across the technology, consumer discretionary, health care and communications sectors.

As 2Q FY19 earnings season comes to a close, there is clear message that while many companies across sectors have not done badly on sales growth, the picture on margins looks much less promising. The interesting thing is that pressure on profitability is not limited to a few companies or just few categories. In addition, geographical exposure and client base doesn't seem to matter as well. We believe this is an important trend because while business strategy of these companies can't be questioned, demand may not be as robust as inferred from sales numbers alone. Despite recent correction, Indian markets are not in value zone yet and no or little PAT growth is bad news. The valuations continue to remain at elevated levels for several stocks and it will be key for market performance over short to medium term.

Our concern stems from the recent pattern of lower highs and continued underperformance relative to MSCI ACWI - remain underweight.  Two bright spots: we are seeing bullish inflections in Japan (TOPIX and Nikkei 225), and India's SENSEX.  We unpack these, and also highlight actionable set ups in our global Communications, and Transportation Sectors.
