<ul><li>As investors we are faced with a deluge of noisy breaking news, business media talking heads, and what has felt like non-stop Fed speakers offering their differing views on the economy and the path of rate hikes going in 2023. </li><li>This week was no different. Fed Chair Jay Powell was front and center suggesting that interest rate hikes will likely be stepped down to 50bps in the upcoming December Fed meeting in a few weeks. </li><li>This was already discounted and expected by the market and effectively didn’t offer much of anything Wall St. didn’t already know.</li></ul>

Investment Talk is for readers who wish to learn about companies that are potentially outside of their own circle of research, as well as those who are longing to become part of a community of like-minded investors and learn more about investment research. I would describe myself as a long-term investor who typically takes a 3Y to 5Y outlook, before reassessing once that period matures. I follow the adage that one should research, reach a conclusion, and then verify and continue to hold so long as the thesis remains intact. My own investing style is one that seeks to find dominant players within their respective market who have shown signs of monopoly or oligopolistic behaviour, unlikely to be disrupted, in tandem with discovering market disruptors who have a high likelihood of disrupting their respective market. Equally (and weighted accordingly) I seek to discover more nuanced, misunderstood, situations with a shorter time frame.

<ul><li>While the world moves on from the events of 2020 and the pandemic fades through the rear-view mirror, a cluster of fallout still clings to Starbucks, the world’s largest coffee retailer.</li><li>The operational stress of the pandemic, as well as concerns over in-store safety1 , catalysed demand for unionisation in the company’s most integral market, the United States.</li><li>Since the first store won its union vote in Buffalo, New York, in December 2021, over 330 stores in 38 states have filed for an election, yielding more than 250 successfully unionised stores.</li></ul>
