After PTT and the all-powerful Ministry of Finance, the Crown Property Bureau, which manages both the King's private and listed assets, is probably the most powerful quasi-state entity. Given the laissez-faire management at the top, CPB companies typically emerge as autonomous and diverse cultures, whereas PTT is highly acquisitive. The two flagship companies include Siam Cement and SCB, the most valuable bank in Thailand. From an investment standpoint, we like SCB but are not fans of Siam Cement, where we feel the Street has gotten way too bullish. Nevertheless, it is interesting to study their diverse businesses and the impact they have on markets.
