In the first part of our South Series, we discuss the much questioned Kra Canal, a canal that could potentially reduce the shipping distance within Asia so much that it could render Singapore's port industry almost redundant yo. If that happens, one beneficiary could be Hong Kong's CK Hutchison, already a market leader in Thailand's port industry. Another is TTA, the country's biggest shipper, though we are not expecting big upsides here, since only roughly a quarter of their revenues and less than half of the money-losing group comes from shipping yo.

Thailand Mourns Fallen King, Healing Will Take Some Time

Hanjin Shipping, the largest Korean shipper and 7th largest in the world, has filed for bankruptcy last month, creating a great deal of confusion for authorities and customers worldwide. The Thai media has said that the global supply glut is so great that even Hanjin's removal alone is unlikely to benefit any of the Thai shippers, though our friends at <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/profiles/356" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="accounts:356">Drewry Maritime Equity Research</a>  said that this may not be 100% true.
