<ul><li>India has hit on two projects to double its rubber production area from the current 800,000 hectares by 2030 in a bid to cut its rubber import bill of INR 5000 crore (US$ 653 million) and be self-reliant. The pipeline project of focusing cultivation of 400,000 hectares in non-traditional states, apart from 100,000 more hectares in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, would be the second project of Rubber Board to expand Indian rubber production.  It is being pitched under the National Rubber Mission piloted by the India Government, and the Rubber Board proposal for the same is now in the Government’s court.</li><li>“The financial commitments, including the Central Government’s subsidy component, will have to be worked out with the State Governments since planting expenses differ from state to state,” said a Rubber Board official.  The Rubber Board anticipates more than seven years for the non-traditional states and the North-East to give yield. Slow kick-off for first project In the first scheme rolled out last year, the Rubber Board has tied up with the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) to cultivate rubber on 200,000 hectares in the next five years in the North-Eastern (NE) states, where the production is currently at suboptimal levels.</li><li>ATMA is spending INR 1100 crore (US$ 143.77 million) while the Rubber Board is implementing the scheme by putting in place clusters of small producers. The project had a tardy start last year on just 3800 hectares, with ATMA spending INR 17 crore (US$ 2.22 million), while this year, 13.2 million saplings will be rooted in 26,000 hectares at an outlay of INR 125 crore (US$ 16.34 million).</li></ul>
