Athaporn Arayasantiparb, CFA

Athaporn served as Head of Research for UOB and ANZ in Thailand and was an award-winning telecoms analyst at UBS in 2010 (AsiaMoney Thailand category) and Regional Strategist for DMG in Singapore. Prior to that, he also served as Kasikornbank credit analyst and scholar. He has a total work experience of 22 years, of which 19 were in research and 9 in research management roles. He started his career as an engineer for PTT and currently manages family investments. He holds an MBA from Stern (NYU) and CFA Charter since 2006.

<p>Viewing the super strong headline numbers with some skepticism in light of history and politics, we parsed out the various parts of the economy. Our sense is that Thailand is still quite strong on external drivers (exports, tourism) but not doing so well on the internal ones (domestic consumption). Progress on government projects is great, but these things take time to bear fruit. As explained in our follow-up of this review, it might be a good idea to conserve some cash and buy when the correction comes, since it's probably around the corner anyway.</p><p>Mall &amp; temple visits, 20th anniversary of the 1997 crisis, manipulative economics, and plain ol' common sense (though it sure ain't common practice)...all rolled into one nice sushi.</p>
