Athaporn Arayasantiparb, CFA

Athaporn served as Head of Research for UOB and ANZ in Thailand and was an award-winning telecoms analyst at UBS in 2010 (AsiaMoney Thailand category) and Regional Strategist for DMG in Singapore. Prior to that, he also served as Kasikornbank credit analyst and scholar. He has a total work experience of 22 years, of which 19 were in research and 9 in research management roles. He started his career as an engineer for PTT and currently manages family investments. He holds an MBA from Stern (NYU) and CFA Charter since 2006.

Five year into the industry liberalization, we are starting to see some negative side of the reforms. In this review, we make four points on industry update:<ul>

Domestic content fatigue. As the industry loses money over multiple years, we see local content development slow down and increase of tired re-runs. M&amp;A or government action might help revive the industry.</li>
<li>
Foreign content remains strong. Major's pipeline of foreign films and MONO's feed of Hollywood reruns remains relatively healthy and popular. Interestingly, the model that works here is a platform that depends on others financing content production.</li>
<li>
Resilience amidst weaker domestic economy. Relative to the weak economy, box office take remains reasonably strong, but matching last year's performance will be a challenge.</li>
<li>
Limited but ever-present threat from the Internet. Netflix and similar platforms continue to advertise heavily, but with limited success in terms of success. </li>
</ul>A recurring theme is that the local players increasingly need help from outsiders, be they government, foreign content providers, or simply wealthy investors from other industries.
