Benchmark crude futures prices jumped nearly 10% last week. Nearly 1.8 million b/d of production outages in the US Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea were responsible for a sizeable part of the premium, which should evaporate soon. Renewed optimism over the second US stimulus package also propped up crude, but this is a highly volatile factor, vulnerable to the twists and turns in the political drama over the coronavirus aid between the Republicans and Democrats, which has reached fever pitch.Crude's fundamentals remain weak, at least for the next six months, as countries across the northern hemisphere hunker down for the winter flu season. Tightening restrictions to avert a second wave of the coronavirus look set to turn the post-Covid oil demand recovery into a flat line.The OPEC+ alliance began putting an additional 2 million b/d into the market from August with a tapering of its historic production cuts, but may have to revisit its plan to add another 2 million b/d from January 1.
