Our process begins by organizing the universe of actively traded stocks into discrete sectors, then into industry groups. We then apply our technical and quantitative tools to identify developing price trends. Once attractive trends are identified within a selected sector or group, we screen for individual stocks which we believe offer the best risk/reward profile. We provide a historical perspective that often reveals, through our long-term charts, how price patterns often repeat themselves over time.

Technical Analysis

The rotation out of stay-at-home/COVID-19 beneficiary stocks and into reopening/economically sensitive stocks that we highlighted last week has continued, leading us to make several upgrades and one downgrade (see first bullet below). This broadening-out of participation and several other bullish developments highlighted below tells us the bulls have the upper hand. In today’s report we highlight attractive Groups and stocks within Discretionary, Transportation, and Manufacturing: CD-05 Auto Parts Retailers, TR-05 Large-Cap Air Freight &amp; Logistics, TR-12 Large-Cap Trucking, and MF-31 Building Products and Fixtures.

The rotation out of stay-at-home/COVID-19 beneficiary stocks and into reopening/economically sensitive stocks that we highlighted last week has continued, leading us to make several upgrades and one downgrade (see first bullet below). U.S. Equity Strategy: Healthy Sector Rotations Continue

As the market churns in a one step forward, one step back fashion, we remain in wait-and-see mode as to whether recent improvements in cyclical value areas of the market have staying power. Considering the lack of breakouts or breakdowns in key cyclical areas of the market, our neutral outlook remains intact. In today’s report we highlight attractive Groups and stocks within Consumer Discretionary, Financials, and Manufacturing: Retailers, Auto Parts, Canadian Banks, and Building Products and Fixtures.

The weight of the evidence suggests that the pullback has begun. This belief is supported by overbought conditions combined with the S&amp;P 500, MSCI ACWI, and nearly all Sectors hitting logical resistance. Assuming the pullback continues, the next question is how deep or damaging will it be? In this report we highlight various market/technical indicators we are monitoring, as well as pointing out attractive set ups within Consumer Discretionary and Health Care Sectors.

Our outlook remains cautious as we continue to expect heightened volatility and a potential retest of the February 2018 lows over the next several weeks. Near-term we are monitoring for S&amp;P 500 support near 2,600 (i.e., the October low) and resistance near 2,817 or the 100- and 50-day moving averages. In today’s report we outline our current concerns along with developments that would cause us to become more constructive on the market. We also highlight attractive set ups within the Financials, Consumer Discretionary, and Health Care Sectors.

U.S. equity markets are, by contrast, not showing any significant signs of coming unhinged as a result of this rout in emerging markets.  In this report we examine the factors likely to impact the U.S. equity markets, and explore actionable opportunities within the Technology, Consumer Discretionary, and Health Care Sectors.
