Theresa May brought her Withdrawal Agreement to the House of Commons for a vote again on 29 March (the day on which British law says the UK leaves the EU at 11pm -- though the government and the EU have since granted an extension until 12th April), but it was defeated again by a margin of 58 votes (286 votes for, 344 against). The Speaker, citing parliamentary precedent going back to the seventeenth century, had ruled that the Withdrawal Agreement (and the political declaration that accompanied it) could not be brought back unchanged to the House for another vote.So only the Withdrawal Agreement was voted on today (without the political declaration). But it was clear from the outset that it would be defeated, since the DUP had said clearly that their bloc of 10 MPs would reject it. But Theresa May was hoping that the Conservative Party would stand solidly behind her Withdrawal Agreement, especially as the leader of the ERG (Jacob Rees-Mogg) and leader of the Tory Brexit campaign (Boris Johnson) had both switched their vote to favour the deal. But 34 Tory MPs still voted against PM May's Withdrawal Agreement (mainly from the ERG, including its deputy leader Steve Baker), dooming it -- perhaps permanently. This is unequivocally bad for Sterling, and the GBP did slump briefly, only to recover on hopes regarding the soft Brexit options that Parliament is set to reconsider on Monday (April 1st). The chances are good for Customs Union (which would solve the Irish border question too).  But if no-deal were to occur, GBP would be a big sell and so would Irish equities, for Eire would suffer grievously from a no-deal Brexit outcome.  <div>
