Galliano's Financials Research provides fundamental research in Emerging Markets financials, including FinTech, as well as financials in select Developed Markets.

The investment style applied is generally value oriented, although Growth At Reasonable Price (GARP) strategies can also be used where appropriate. 

Our investment research approach aim is often contrarian, looking to capitalise on overly sceptical or optimistic consensus views. In terms of valuation techniques, the focus is on PBV ratio to ROE, PE multiples and dividend yield, as well as the application of PEG ratios and, where appropriate, Sum of the Parts (SOTP) valuations.

<li>Exchanges continue to seek revenue streams outside of the traditional trading fees in post-trading, as well as capitalising on “big data” in financial transactions and data services</li>
<li>We identify three relative value opportunities in exchanges; MexBolsa, B3 and Deutsche Borse feature positively multiple times in our value screens and they are all diversifying revenue streams</li>

<li>Allocations in German Financial stocks have fallen heavily over the past year.  Just 31.5% of Global managers are now exposed to the sector.</li>
<li>Declines have been among the worst among country/sector peers over the last 6-months, led by selling in Allianz SE and Deutsche Bourse.</li>
<li>With only 2 stocks owned by more than 10% of funds, German Financials appear to have lost their appeal among Global managers.</li>
</ul>

<li>HKEX reported a weak set of 4Q21 earnings results of HKD 2.7 bn, declining HKD 577 mn (17.7%) linked quarter, driven by the decline in cash ADT and higher costs; </li>
<li>Derivative activity remained flattish linked quarter with contract volume at 507 thousand – despite the successful launch of the MSCI China A50 Connect (HK A50); and </li>
<li>With HIBOR set to increase, HKEx is likely to become more reliant on lower quality investment income. </li>
</ul>

<li>SGX FY 1H22 core results were not robust, coming in at SGD 216 mn, improving just SGD 1.0 mn (0.5%) HOH and reflected weakened revenues; </li>
<li>Derivatives revenue improved 3.4% HOH, resultant of slightly higher contract volumes, and higher rates and lower discounts. HKEX's foray into the A50 will ultimately eat away at SGX’s business; and </li>
<li>Significant strategic alternatives are needed at SGX, if it is to avoid being hollowed out by the HKEX. </li>
</ul>

<li>Both are based on the Hang Seng Index. HSI ESG Screened Index is essentially ESG factor-tilted with a minor exclusionary screen. Straightforward, and with top ESG ratings firms behind it.</li>
<li>I do, however, have a few thoughts about the HSI Low Carbon Index. Call them observations, or experienced-based opinions, or similar. Food for thought kind of stuff, nothing critical.  </li>
