</div>EARLY DAYS - In the last seven trading days, 473 Japanese companies have reported quarterly results, 11% of the 3,830 that are currently listed. Of this 76 % have been annual results for the fiscal year ended March 2019.  Also, there have been 328 initial forecasts for the year to March 2020, 227 initial interim forecasts and 228 intra-year revisions. With the long holiday break, there will be an avalanche of announcements from the 7th May onwards. In this Insight, we shall look at the trends apparent in the results so far released.  In the last month, our Market Composite trailing-twelve-month (TTM) data series is unchanged for Operating Income, while Net Income has increased by ¥0.2t. With 13% of March-year-end companies have issued FY2020 forecasts, aggregate forecast Operating Income is ¥0.7t lower and is in line with TTM Operating Income. The forecast operating margin is now 42 basis points below the 2018 peak level, while the slippage in net margins is 78 basis points. Although the sample is not the same, to IBES consensus estimates have current downtrend bottoming out in the second half of the year with net margins recovering to 6.6% in 2021. </div>RESULTS &amp; REVISION SCORES - Our scoring methodology for results and forecasts/revisions incorporates rates of change and other momentum factors and has historically provided a better fit with changes in aggregate market value. Although the Market Composite Results Score has remained stable in the last week at 2.21, we expect the score to end this results 'season' closer to zero as indicated by the trend in the Forecast/Revision Score. The latter has declined for six quarters in a row and the current quarter will make it seven. Although our data series only covers the last forty quarters and is perhaps too short for generalisations, it would be unusual for the Forecasts/Revision Score series to have an eighth down quarter in a row. The chart above merges both scores to create a cleaner timeline, and key turning points in <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/22826" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:22826:1">JUSDJPY CURNCY</a> highlighted. With the currency cross trading in a narrow range, there is little support or stimulus in the next six months. Interim Forecasts are often prepared by the divisional heads are not accorded the same 'reverence' as the Annual Forecasts. As a result, the Interim numbers offer a good leading indicator of short-term trends. Technical Analysis

Japan has been a favored pair short bet against the likes of China. The standout chart feature is the rising wedge break of support and reaction rise to test the elevated underside of this trendline (backswing resistance). Very often backswing resistance points are not surpassed and act as a cycle turn point. Yesterday's Nikkei price reversal favors this outcome.We anticipate risk appetite to exhaust for US equities and the China complex once a trade deal is locked in (with drawn out conditions for the market to digest). This would leave the fragile Nikkei technical posture vulnerable to a hard correction cycle. The overall major trend still remains down for Japan (and Korea) unlike China.A higher conviction USD/JPY peak will unfold at noted RSI and MACD resistance points that are expected to make peaks and a bearish turn cycle.

Macroeconomics

<li>The broad decline in global bond yields and curve flattening suggest that the market has become more concerned about weak global economic growth.</li>
<li>The fall in yields is at odds with the rise in equity and commodity prices this year, but the later may have lost upward momentum.</li>
<li>Safe haven currencies, gold and JPY, have strengthened this week and are likely to perform well if yields remain low.</li>
<li>US real yields have fallen more than nominal yields this year, with a partial recovery in inflation expectations from their fall in Q4 last year. Lower real yields point to weaker fundamental support for the USD, and further support safe havens like gold.</li>
<li>Canadian real long term yields have fallen more abruptly than in the USA, into negative territory, suggesting the outlook for the Canadian economy has deteriorated more than most. This may relate to concern over a peaking in the Canadian housing market. The fall in real yields suggests further downside risk for the CAD.</li>
<li>Long term inflation breakevens have fallen in Australia sharply since September last year to now well below the RBA’s 2.5% inflation target.</li>
<li>Australian leading indicators of the labour market have turned lower, albeit from solid levels, and may be enough, combined with broader evidence of weaker growth, for the RBA to announce an easing bias as soon as April.</li>
<li>Asian trade data and flash PMI data for major countries point to ongoing and significant weakness in global trade.</li>

Gold May Rise on Lower Real Ylds; Canada Leads Fall in Real Ylds; Aust Inflation Expectations Slump

NEW YEAR RALLY - From the December 25th's lows of 8% by number and 11% by value, the percentages of Japanese stocks above the weighted sum of moving averages have recovered to 14% by number and 20% by value - just on the 'buying zone' line. As we <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/insights/japan-2018-market-review-bear-market-rally-ahead" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="insights:26917">expected</a>, the Total Market Value has rallied 8.7% and looks to have some further to run, especially if the Yen reverses some of its recent strength. The Bank of Japan provided a 'helping hand' on both 4th and 10th January, the only days this year so far on which the market declined.

COMPANY MOVING AVERAGE OUTLIERS - As with the market and sectors, our moving average outlier indicator uses a weighted sum of the share price relative to its 5-day, 20-day, 60-day, 120 day and 240-day moving averages. Extreme values are weighted sums greater than 100% and less than -100%. We would caution that this indicator is best used for timing shorter-term reversals and, in many cases, higher highs and lower lows will be seen.

THE +/-100% CLUB - The number of extreme negative outliers reached a peak for 1,352 on December 25th and has since returned to 'normal' levels. We suggested in the previous Insight in this series that such an extreme number of extremes was a signal of a short-term bottom, which, so far, has proved to be correct.

NEW YEAR RALLY - From the December 25th's lows of 8% by number and 11% by value, the percentages of Japanese stocks above the weighted sum of moving averages have recovered to 14% by number and 20% by value - just on the 'buying zone' line. As we expected, the Total Market Value has rallied 8.7% and looks to have some further to run, especially if the Yen reverses some of its recent strength. The Bank of Japan provided a 'helping hand' on both 4th and 10th January, the only days this year so far on which the market declined.
