Generally, we would avoid securities companies, since commissions in Thailand, already low at 13bps, continues to decline due to competition. In our earlier review, we looked at CNS on the Abenomics theme, but market leader Maybank Kim Eng (MBKET) now looks better on a risk, return, and yield profile.Non-bank financiers are more attractive than both banks and brokers, since they can charge higher interest rates (as high as 15% and even higher than 30% for micro-finance). In addition, their business is still growing regardless of the economy. Within this group, we stand by our Abenomics-themed favorite for valuation and financing reasons.

We provide research and consultancy on Asian banks. Our focus is on what we call “Asian bank research, without the noise.” We are interested in the most critical swing-factors for banks, the NPL and credit cycle, and where we believe there is a gap between perception and reality. We often focus on the less studied components of bank financial statements.  Our research is highly thematic, sometimes examining unlisted banks and companies as a window on mainstream banks. 

Being independent allows us to look at smaller banks, often overlooked by others. Analysis of BIS bank guidelines in the context of Asia, is also a focal point, while we also analyze global banks operating in the region. We use what we believe is the most comprehensive, reliable financials database, SNL Financial. S&P Capital IQ augments our database, with corporate data and CEIC, with economics.

The way this usually plays out is first with liquidity.&nbsp; </li><li>Banks pull credit lines from weaker banks (and weaker companies).&nbsp; </li><li>If a bank has a loan to deposit ratio (LDR) above 100%, it is often difficult to repay the redeemed credit line, as it means disposing of an asset, a loan – immediately. &nbsp; </li></ul>
