<li>Korea banned all short selling in March 2020 and resumed short selling only on <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/korea-stock-exchange-kospi-200" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:26021:1" rel="noopener">KOSPI 200</a> and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/kosdaq-150-index" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:31077:1" rel="noopener">KOSDAQ 150</a> index constituents in May 2021.</li>
<li>News reports indicate that there could be another short sell ban as soon as the coming week. Indications are that the ban could last 6 months.</li>
<li>There are many implications of a total short sell ban including futures backwardation, market manipulation, and no emerging to developed market promotion.</li>

<li>The top 10 performing stocks in KOSPI were up on average 310% in 2023, sharply outperforming KOSPI which was up 19%. </li>

<li>The reduction of credit loans by Korea Investment &amp; Securities and Kiwoom Securities in the past week may have accelerated unwinding of positions of 8 stocks related to CFD selling.  </li>
<li>The balance of credit loans for KOSPI increased 12.7% YTD. On the other hand, the balance of credit loans for KOSDAQ increased by 36.1% YTD. </li>
<li>As local securities companies further reduce credit loans and regulators also restrict CFD related leverage, a sound pair trade could be to go long KOSPI 200 and short KOSDAQ 150. </li>
