<p>In this report, we review our IPO investment research in 2020, including the performance of our calls and how we plan to change our process of selection for IPO research in 2021. For those who follow Smartkarma's IPO research, this platform provides one of the most extensive, independent IPO related research (especially in Asian markets). </p><div class="content-highlight"><p><strong>We made 40 investment calls on IPOs this year, of which 34 had positive ratings on the IPOs and 6 had negative ratings. The 36 stocks (with positive ratings) had share price performances that were up 74.5% on average from their IPO prices. The 6 stocks (with negative ratings) had share price performances that were up only 8% on average from their IPO prices. </strong></p></div>

<p>As a reminder, we advocated buying Coupa around the bottom back in early April as it was a good entry point for a permanently expensive Adobe/ServiceNow like compounder (15x back then). We decided to step to the sidelines last quarter as the company didn’t offer much new disclosures around Pay and an oddly conservative guidance for this quarter….which not so shockingly they blew out. This quarters’ guidance for 4Q21 is equally conservative, and if you strip out its Llamasoft acquisition, you get the same sandbagged guidance as last quarter.</p><div class="content-highlight"><p>Obex’s fundamental research process is focused on secular change in the TMT and Consumer sectors. We seek to differentiate between fundamental business analysis and security analysis. Before deciding if a security’s pricing and positioning merit a long or short position, we analyze the four pillars of business fundamentals (Secular Factors, TAM, Competitive Advantage, Business Model) in order to determine if this is a “good” or “not so good” opportunity.</p></div>

Coupa 3Q21 Earnings: The Boy Who Cried Wolf

<p>Snowflake had a good quarter…it was a bit above expectations that were well telegraphed from the IPO, and their guidance was only inline (though likely conservative)….so what does one do with a stock that is the single richest multiple in the stock market (100x+ sales)? Buy a lot more? We can’t pretend to understand why this stock was up 16% today. And we can’t pretend to understand why the market values its revenues at 3x!!! the rest of high valuation software. We don’t short on valuation alone. But we certainly couldn’t justify owning Snowflake.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><div class="content-highlight"><p>Obex’s fundamental research process is focused on secular change in the TMT and Consumer sectors. Crowdstrike 3Q21: Like Shooting Fish in a Barrel

<p>When we first began writing about Slack last summer, an acquisition was always on the radar, even as we were initially positive....for the same reason we flipped negative. Slack is a product, not a company, and is best housed inside a larger enterprise IT company...Salesforce.com is certainly it. Price matters though...and Slack is now trading ~22x forward EV/Sales after the 20% rip....CRM 10x. Are we sure Marc Benioff is willing to dilute his stock THAT much? slack = 10% of CRM EV.</p><div class="content-highlight"><p>Obex’s fundamental research process is focused on secular change in the TMT and Consumer sectors.
