We are past the halfway mark in the review period for the September rebalance of the NIFTY100 Index. We see five potential changes which should be announced end August.
There is a high probability of Tata Power (TPWR IN), Indian Railway Catering and Tourism (IRCTC IN), Bharat Electronics (BHE IN) and Mphasis Ltd (MPHL IN) being added to the index.
High probability deletions are Lupin Ltd (LPC IN), Jubilant Foodworks (JUBI IN), Zydus Lifesciences Ltd (ZYDUSLIF IN), Punjab National Bank (PNB IN) and Steel Authority of India (SAIL IN).


NIFTY100 Index Rebalance Preview: Five Potential Changes in September

<li>Two-Thirds of the way through the review period, we see 7 stocks migrating from MidCap to LargeCap, 8 stocks from LargeCap to MidCap, and 1 new listing added to LargeCap.</li>

India: Preview of Stock Reclassification for Active Funds

Post market close on 23 August, the Index Maintenance Sub-Committee (IMSC) of NSE Indices announced the results of the September index review for the NIFTY family of indices. OurQ2-2021 All Cap High-Risk screen of stocks produced a market cap-weighted average price decline of 2%. In comparison, the MSCI Asia Pacific Index posted a decline of 1.7% over the same period. The stock quality of our Q2 2021 decreased 2.4 points or 3.8% over the period. Within the mix of 34 stocks in our Q2 2021 (May) list 19 posted negative performance, with an average decline of 14.1%.</li>

At a static number of 34 stocks our Q3 2021 screen, delivers an interesting composition this quarter, with eight (8) new names and strong representation from Hong Kong in terms of geography and Industrials and Basic Materials from a sector perspective. This suggests that the “reopening of the economy” trade may have run its course for now.</li>
<li>Our Q3 2021 screen shows a further reduction in average stock rank (a reading on relative quality amongst the broad market peers with 100 being the highest) to 61 from 65.18 in Q2 2021.</li>

Equity schemes classified as large cap need to have at least 80% of their assets invested in large cap stocks, large and mid cap schemes need to have at least 35% of their assets in large cap stocks and at least 35% in mid cap stocks, mid cap funds need to hold at least 65% of their assets in mid cap stocks, and small cap funds need to hold at least 65% of their assets in small cap stocks. Flexi cap funds can invest across market caps.</div><div>
The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) publishes the list of the stocks in each market cap segment in January and July each year and mutual funds have one month to rebalance their portfolios to adhere to the new categorization.
At the next recategorization in July 2021, we see 7 stocks moving from the mid cap segment to the large cap segment with an equal number of stocks moving the other way, and 13 stocks are expected to move from the small cap segment to the mid cap segment with the 16 stocks moving from the mid cap to the small cap segment. There are 3 recent listings that will enter the mid cap segment with over 18 joining the small cap segment.
Historically, the stocks migrating upward to a higher market cap segment have outperformed stocks that migrate to a lower market cap segment over the 1 month and 2 month period post the publishing of the AMFI list. This can be attributed to fund managers realigning their portfolios to meet the new categorization. This provides opportunities to pre-position for the move and unwind post the announcement of the reclassification.
