In technical publications like patents and research papers, cross-references are made to existing patents and research papers. We believe these mentions and citations can provide valuable insights into the views and impressions of experts in the specific innovations and technologies within a sector and hence the likelihood of success. In this report (which is the first one we are publishing) we have crawled through more than ten years of publications (several thousand) to analyze a subset in the Lifesciences space namely PEPTIDES.  Needless to say the same can be done with respect to other technological areas in other sectors as well.We backtested our methodology (dating three years back) to look for any specific actionable idea the analysis might throw up. We noted that among the small or mid-cap stocks that screened well half were acquired over the next three years Specific to this report we highlight over ten companies that are likely acquisition targets over the next three years. Within those, two companies that screen very well based purely on data mined from the publications and our parameters of number of innovations, number of citations, Recency, and Impact are a Germany based Nasdaq listed - Immatics (IMTX) and US-based Coherus (CHRS)

Stock Ideas Based on Data Mined from Technical Publications - A Look Into Peptides

When <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/showa-denko-k-k" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:1496:1" rel="noopener">Showa Denko K.K. (4004 JP)</a> presented their H1 <a href="https://www.sdk.co.jp/assets/files/english/ir/library/pdf_presentation/results2021-2q.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">results</a> on 10 August 2021, and later held their analyst call, it seemed quite bullish. The company was a year ahead of its internal integration efforts after having purchased Hitachi Chemical (renaming it Showa Denko Materials) in a HUGE debt-financed deal in 2020. The company noted that all businesses were operating well and that residual negative numbers coming from restructuring costs and other weaknesses were simply a matter of time to overcome.The company showed an OP forecast which even it admitted was light, and for the year the forecast at ¥85bn remains significantly impacted by the amortisation of goodwill due to the purchase of the Hitachi Chemicals business (¥17.6bn this year). This is to say that OP would be 20% higher if Showa Denko had used US-GAAP or IFRS to account for the purchase of Hitachi Chem.Net Income forecasts out years from now are impacted by this cost to amortise the purchase goodwill. The call was interesting in that it talked about efforts to reduce interest-bearing debt, and also talked about aggressive investment measures. That probably should have been a hint. The shares fell hard from the 17th to the 20th as crude oil did too. <section class="figure"><figure class="editor-figure mceNonEditable"><img src="https://static-prod.smartkarma.com/images/media/000/227/837/original/Screenshot+2021-09-04+at+5.14.22+PM.png?1630746942" class="editor-image img-responsive" data-smartkarma-image-id="227837"></figure></section>And 13 days after the earnings release the company <a href="https://www.sdk.co.jp/assets/files/english/news/2021/20210823_sdknewsrelease_e.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> an equity sale where they would sell 35.1mm shares (including greenshoe) to investors. That is a big number, at roughly a quarter of the pre-existing share count. It is even bigger when you consider shareholder structure. Pricing is likely on 6 September. Below the fold we look at shareholder structure, offer structure, and index demand.

Pacific Textiles stock has trended sideways since we last looked at the company in November. Nevertheless, given the long downtrend the stock experienced between 2016 and 2020 we believe that the stock’s break out of its downtrend and signs of improved momentum through the sector bode well, particularly in light of valuations which remain very reasonable.

Pacific Textiles – Valuation and Sector Momentum Update

On Thursday, the Nikkei came out with an <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Economy/BOJ-to-widen-interest-rate-target-range-to-support-bank-profits" target="_blank" rel="noopener">article</a> during the lunch break of equities trading. The headline said "BOJ to widen interest rate target range to support bank profits" and indeed in the article it noted that the BOJ would allow the long end of the curve to fluctuate more widely, creating a slightly steeper curve. This could lead to slightly better bank profits less because of the extra 5bp on the curve but more because of the expectation of forcing borrowers to pay more on an absolute basis. What was MORE important for equity markets was the idea that the BOJ "would also abolish its target for purchasing exchange-traded funds, now 6 trillion yen ($55 billion) per year, and instead vow to make such purchases only in times of market turmoil."The article also suggested that the "Target" would be removed for the ¥90bn of J-REITs they buy as a base case (doubled now to ¥180bn as the ¥6trln was doubled to ¥12trln in the depths of the covid crash of March 2020). This move caused Nikkei to underperform TOPIX on the day. TOPIX actually ended up on the day, and ended above where the market closed the AM session before the article came out.
