<p><strong><em>*Another Poor Showing: </em></strong>Hang Seng Bank (11.HK) [Hang Seng] reported a 1H21 result of HKD 8.8 bn, improving HKD 1.2 bn (16.3%) HOH. However, core operating results improved only nominally by HKD 52 mn or 0.8% over the period. Were it not for the unreasonable decline of HKD 639 mn (65.3%) in loss provisions as credit deteriorated, results would have been far worse;  and</p><p><strong><em>*Provisions Now Significantly Understated: </em></strong>While the current NPL ratio is not alarming on its face, the HOH increase in net new NPLs is HKD 1.7 bn or 23.5% annualized - decelerating from the HKD 3.0 bn or 201% annualized at 2H20. We find Hang Seng under-provided for to the tune of HKD 10.6 bn or nearly 1.5x the bank’s core operating result.</p>

Jackson (JXN.US) will become a separately listed company on the New York Stock Exchange. After the de-merger, Prudential will hold approximately 19.7% of Jackson’s common shares and will monetize a portion of this within a year of the de-merger; and</p><p><em><strong>*Franchise Of The Future: </strong></em> We see Prudential's exiting of its US business is a positive, as it will reduce the group's exposure to US macro and transition the group into a pure Asian play. We believe that Prudential's Asian franchise is impressive with a strong growth outlook.</p>

ZhongAn Online P&C Insurance C / Equity Bottom-Up

<p><strong><em>*June Premium: </em></strong>ZhongAn Online P&amp;C Insurance (6060.HK) [ZhongAn] reported June 2021 premium growth of 49% YoY, ending 1H21 with gross written premium (GWP) growth of 45% YOY. Two factors contributed to the overall growth: 1) COVID-19 recovery; and 2) the low base in 2020; and</p><p><strong><em>*Bottom-line Challenges Remain: </em></strong><span class="leadin">The fact of the matter is that ZhongAn’s bottom-line remains challenged. </span>Auto and Consumer Finance have decelerating and declining turnover growth given the continued COVID-19 business disruptions. While YOY combined ratio improved, the improvement came largely from credit insurance whose loss ratio declined from 97% in 2019 to 63%. Given the continued credit insurance headaches at PICC P&amp;C (2328.HK) and Ping An Insurance, we have a difficult time believing that little old ZhongAn has figured out the secret sauce to credit insurance risk.</p>
