We provide research and consultancy on Asian banks. Our focus is on what we call “Asian bank research, without the noise.” We are interested in the most critical swing-factors for banks, the NPL and credit cycle, and where we believe there is a gap between perception and reality. We often focus on the less studied components of bank financial statements.  Our research is highly thematic, sometimes examining unlisted banks and companies as a window on mainstream banks. 

Being independent allows us to look at smaller banks, often overlooked by others. Analysis of BIS bank guidelines in the context of Asia, is also a focal point, while we also analyze global banks operating in the region. We use what we believe is the most comprehensive, reliable financials database, SNL Financial. S&P Capital IQ augments our database, with corporate data and CEIC, with economics.

Technical Analysis

Market dynamics remain largely healthy, and new developments continue to point to improving risk appetites. Still, Energy (XOP, RYE) is the only cyclical value Sector that has been able to decisively break to new price highs, while others remain in congestion. US Banks – Modified Loans Marginal, For Some

In last Tuesday’s Compass (10/27/20) we noted the S&amp;P 500’s break below 3425 short-term support opened the door for potential visits to 3325 and 3200. U.S. Equity Strategy: Markets Bouncing off Key Support

There is a major credit cost improvement across many banks globally during 2Q20. This is likely driven by improved credit modeling for defaults and losses, which will be driven in large part by economic recovery, rising oil prices and unprecedented central bank and government support. This does not mean that there risks do not remain, but it shows that perhaps many banks took too much provisions during 1Q20. Some banks stand out, where credit costs were several times higher than full year 2019.
