<p><a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/dongfang-electric-corporation-limited" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:1251:1" rel="noopener">Dongfang Electric Corporation (1072 HK)</a> (DEC) has been rallying on the back of its hydrogen energy angle and the pumped storage story. Given the company's experience and leadership in hydro generating equipment, we think it is well positioned to capture the gigantic market opportunity from the government's push to increase pumped storage capacity in the country by potentially a CAGR of 16% between 2020 and 2035. </p><p>DEC's edges are its expertise and technical competence - it has completed complicated projects like the world's largest pumped storage (Fengning, Hebei), highest operating water heads in China (Changlongshan, Zhejiang) and largest single unit size of generation (Xianju, Zhejiang). Currently, it has pipeline in Fujian, Xinjiang, Chongqing and Henan among others. Despite the recent spike in share price, valuations are still not too demanding at 12.7x PER for FY21 and 11.4x for FY22. We even see likeliness for earnings upgrade after 1H21 result announcement set for 27-Aug.</p>

<strong>Our</strong><strong>Q2-2021 All Cap High-Risk screen of stocks produced a market cap-weighted average price decline of 2%</strong>. In comparison, the MSCI Asia Pacific Index posted a decline of 1.7% over the same period. The stock quality of our Q2 2021 decreased 2.4 points or 3.8% over the period. Within the mix of 34 stocks in our Q2 2021 (May) list 19 posted negative performance, with an average decline of 14.1%.</li>

<strong>At a static number of 34</strong><strong> stocks our Q3 2021 screen, delivers an interesting composition this quarter, </strong>with eight (8) new names and strong representation from Hong Kong in terms of geography and Industrials and Basic Materials from a sector perspective. OurQ2-2021 All Cap High-Risk screen of stocks produced a market cap-weighted average price decline of 2%. In comparison, the MSCI Asia Pacific Index posted a decline of 1.7% over the same period. The stock quality of our Q2 2021 decreased 2.4 points or 3.8% over the period. Within the mix of 34 stocks in our Q2 2021 (May) list 19 posted negative performance, with an average decline of 14.1%.

In other words, there is huge room for the growth of China's hydrogen economy.</p><p>Share prices of many hydrogen-concept stocks have rallied sharply lately. Most of them have projects in the early-stage of development and still do not derive any meaningful contribution from such hydrogen ventures. However, we looked into some interesting names which potentially to be significant players over the long term. <p>Our screen looks for high valuation multiples presented by companies with significant earnings growth forecasts, as well as financial indicators that suggest balance sheet stress. 34 stocks appear in our Q2 2021 screen, versus 25 in Q1 2021 and 15 in Q4 2020. Our Q2 2021 screen shows a reduction in average stock rank to 65.18 from 70.8 points compared to the Q1 2020 screen, placing the stocks lower into the second quartile of the market and showing a deterioration in fundamental and technical aspects. Whilst this is a 7.6% decline, we see this data as tainted by trailing fundamentals. As we highlighted in previous commentaries, we expect the market to see a defined separation of Quality, Value and Relative Momentum over the next few quarters. The erosion is not unexpected as we see a wave of updated forecasts.</p>

<p>The first sector discussed is <strong>Consumer</strong>, where liquid H/A spreads narrowed on average 0.6% this past week after narrowing 2.7% the week before. Spreads are now tighter by 2.1% on average over a four-week period. Four of six liquid Hs outperformed their As.</p>
<p>Southbound accounts were large-ish net buyers on the week. There were three net buys and three net sells but the net buying ended up being all <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/byd-co-ltd-h" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:20962:1" rel="noopener">BYD (1211 HK)</a>, again. <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/guangzhou-automobile-group-co-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:11082:1" rel="noopener">Guangzhou Automobile Group (2238 HK)</a> saw significant net selling. </p>

<p>Last week I recommended staying long the H vs A on <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/great-wall-motor-co-ltd-cb302af9-398c-4d2d-ba39-023e43287eef" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:128:1" rel="noopener">Great Wall Motor (2333 HK)</a> and that spread gained 1.6% for the week (after gaining 4.7% the week before when it was also recommended). This past week I put out the Weekly late on Monday (after 2pm), when BYD in Hong Kong had gained 3.7% vs the As on the day, and so recommended implementing a short BYD (1211 HK) H vs A share trade and from that point or even from the end of the day or the next, the Hs actually underperformed the As by 0.4%. </p>
