Our process begins by organizing the universe of actively traded stocks into discrete sectors, then into industry groups. We then apply our technical and quantitative tools to identify developing price trends. Once attractive trends are identified within a selected sector or group, we screen for individual stocks which we believe offer the best risk/reward profile. We provide a historical perspective that often reveals, through our long-term charts, how price patterns often repeat themselves over time.

Technical Analysis

We have said it before and we will say it again; new highs are not a sell signal. This time we are referring to the S&amp;P 500 which is breaking out to all-time highs (above the prior February highs), something we have been able to say about the Nasdaq 100 for over two months. Breadth remains constructive for small- and large-caps and yesterday’s price action appears to be the start of yet another rotation into cyclical value/”reopening” plays. Our outlook remains bullish and we believe the path of least resistance remains higher. In today’s report we highlight attractive Groups and stocks within Materials &amp; Technology.

Considering the absence of breakdowns for the major indexes and for individual Sectors, along with the Fed covering investors’ backs, we continue to have a bullish outlook and we believe that the path of least resistance remains higher. U.S. Equity Strategy - Bullish Outlook Intact

Our base case continues to be for near-term consolidation while the market determines the implications of states’ reopening (i.e., the “wait-and-see” phase). Until this consolidation period resolves below support or above resistance we are maintaining a relatively neutral stance considering the wide range of outcomes. Many major indexes are testing logical resistance and until we see breakouts it is hard to get too bullish. In this report we highlight attractive stocks from a RS perspective.

S&amp;P 500 Potential Support Levels. Current logical support levels we are monitoring include the December 2018 low of 2,346 and prior resistance in 2015-2016 at 2,130-2,200. The 2,346 level would make a lot of sense, however there is nothing that says we can’t be down 35% (coinciding with the 2,130-2,200 level) or more from the highs. Ultimately, COVID-19 is holding the market hostage and it likely will stay that way until the virus spread diminishes.

The S&amp;P 500 made a new all-time closing high following the largely as-expected U.S.-China trade cease-fire agreement, but it did so unconvincingly. We would not call it a breakout as the market closed well off of the opening highs and not one cyclical Sector is decisively in new high territory. Overall, the market is sending mixed signals. Barring additional positive developments we believe upside is likely to be muted from here. In today’s report we highlight attractive Groups and stocks within Health Care, Services, and Technology: Diagnostic Imaging, Construction &amp; Engineering, Large-Cap, and Solar Energy.
