Magic Empire Global (MEGL US) shares are currently up 45x since its listing at US$4.00 per share on 5 August. Its market cap currently stands at US$3.6 billion.
Just like AMTD Digital (HKD US), it is hard to pinpoint the real reason for MEGL’s share price surge. MEGL’s financials are uninspiring and cannot justify the share price ramp.

<p>In the spirit of the long-awaited UEFA Euro 2020, we present our inaugural "China Financials: Silver Linings Playbook", which summarizes our views on the names that are best positioned to navigate an environment of progressively slower credit growth, tighter liquidity and rising defaults. </p>
<p><strong>Our screen consists of 100+ stocks in the A/H share universe, as well as a select number of international / non-traditional names that have significant exposures to China's financial system. </strong>We have a preference for larger-cap and liquid names, which are then filtered by our opinions on their fundamentals, value, momentum and recent trading volumes. We also try to make our selections versatile and less vulnerable to single-factor movements.</p>
<p><strong>Each player's position on the pitch and the team formation itself convey incremental information about our thoughts on the sector's performance over a three to six-month horizon. </strong>To the extent possible, we intend to update our ideas on a periodic basis. This provides a feedback loop with our other ongoing research on the industry.</p>
<p><strong>However, our team selections are not investment recommendations. </strong>Instead, they are meant to give structure to our analysis. The playbook allows us to articulate our views on the sector in a timely, concise manner. <p>This Original aims to identify the key investment opportunities among the listed brokers in the three major East Asian countries - China, Japan, and Korea. </p><p>By looking at the development of the brokerage sectors in these three countries, we observe a general trend where upstart online brokers first compete against the more established brokers based on their cost and technological advantages. This then pushes the more established brokers to either focus on more lucrative wholesale businesses or adopt and invest in tech initiatives in order to stay competitive in the retail market.</p><p>After further establishing themselves in the retail market, these upstart online brokers then also diversify and expand into the more lucrative wealth/asset management or even wholesale businesses.  By gauging at which phase the broker is in this cycle, investors can have a good understanding of its future outlook.</p><p>In our opinion, Korean brokers currently offer the best value, while the Chinese pure-play online brokers offer the highest growth potential. <p>Spreads narrowed sharply this week with 68 of 100 liquid spreads narrowing, 32 widening. The big winner on the week was Consumer narrowing 2.46% as every spread in the space narrowed despite five of six stocks falling in Hs (i.e. As fell even more). </p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/shandong-chenming-paper-h" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:13775:1" rel="noopener">Shandong Chenming Paper H (1812 HK)</a> situation intruded on the H/S spreads this week as the decision to convert the B shares to Hs (described by <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/profiles/david-blennerhassett" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="accounts:840" rel="noopener">David Blennerhassett</a> in <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/insights/shandong-chenming-paper-1812-hk-the-h-b-convergence-trade" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="insights:49247" rel="noopener">Shandong Chenming Paper (1812 HK): The H/B Convergence Trade</a> mid-week) caused ructions in the H/A spread.</p>
<p>But overall, it was a decent week. Only two sectors saw spreads widen (Energy and Utilities), both accompanied by net southbound selling in the week to Wednesday (the last day to which we have granular name-by-name data).</p>

Interestingly, the narrower the spread, to start with, the better the performance on the week. <p>On the 4 June 2019, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/cordlife-group-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:568:1" rel="noopener">Cordlife (CLGL SP)</a> <a href="https://links.sgx.com/FileOpen/CGL%20SGX%20-%20Announcement%20of%20Indicative%20Non-Binding%20Proposal.ashx?App=Announcement&amp;FileID=562493" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> a non-binding proposal for <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/global-cord-blood-corp" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:689:1" rel="noopener">Global Cord Blood (CO US)</a> (GCB), via the issuance of 2.497bn shares worth S$1.248bn or an indicative Offer Price of US$7.50/share. The transaction was subject to the entry into a definitive transaction documentation, including a merger agreement following satisfactory completion of business, financial, legal, and other due diligence.</p>
<p>Some 18 months later, Cordlife announced the <a href="https://links.sgx.com/FileOpen/CGL_SGX_Termination_of_discussion_Indicative_Non-Binding_Proposal.ashx?App=Announcement&amp;FileID=648215" target="_blank" rel="noopener">termination</a> of the proposal.</p>

<p>On the 2 March, less than a month after Cordlife walked away, GCB <a href="https://ir.globalcordbloodcorp.com/static-files/f8b2aceb-b2fb-4de7-b9ea-5e466584ceda" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> the receipt of a non-binding acquisition proposal from a wholly-owned subsidiary of <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/haitong-international-securities-group-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:13153:1" rel="noopener">Haitong International Securities Group (665 HK)</a>. The consideration under the proposal is US$5/share.</p>
<p>Yesterday GCB <a href="https://ir.globalcordbloodcorp.com/static-files/57848e55-d492-4a0b-8eee-03e431935b68" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> the formation of a special committee to evaluate the proposal.</p>
