Technical Analysis

<ul><li>Efforts to identify peak inflation and yields or lows in growth stocks and new investments have not worked in 2022.  </li><li>The assumption has been that prices should revert towards the mean once they have moved 3-5 standard deviations away as they have done in the last decade.</li><li>If we use what has happened to yield in the last 35+ years as a framework. You would continue to look for peak yields as soon as we start approaching the trend channel or key resistance and plotting the next financial crisis to coincide with yield reversals.</li></ul>

<li>The Reserve Bank of India roiled the market yesterday with an unexpected inter-meeting policy rate increase, leading to rates moving higher across the curve.</li>
<li>I have been arguing for a few months that the RBI needs to start raising rates based on the high inflation and narrowing rate differential with the US.</li>
<li>Despite the move higher in rates in India, I continue to like paying rates in India, particularly against receivers in other countries to hedge against the volatile US rates.</li>

The Reserve Bank of India roiled the market yesterday with an unexpected inter-meeting policy rate increase, leading to rates moving higher across the curve.
I have been arguing for a few months that the RBI needs to start raising rates based on the high inflation and narrowing rate differential with the US.
Despite the move higher in rates in India, I continue to like paying rates in India, particularly against receivers in other countries to hedge against the volatile US rates.


India’s “Surprise” Rate Hike Was Overdue

<ul><li>While much focus has been on EURO/USD cross, Asian currencies haven’t seen that much focus due to range-bound markets.</li><li>That is until two weeks ago when the USD/YEN breakout caught the imagination and became the centre of all things foreign exchange. Bonds &amp; short-term interest rates have been the macro focus of 2022.</li><li>The extent to which US bond yields have risen signals that the bond sell-off is not about to end despite the inverted yield curve. It is likely to cause more pain for EM countries.</li></ul>

While much focus has been on EURO/USD cross, Asian currencies haven’t seen that much focus due to range-bound markets.That is until two weeks ago when the USD/YEN breakout caught the imagination and became the centre of all things foreign exchange. Bonds &amp; short-term interest rates have been the macro focus of 2022.The extent to which US bond yields have risen signals that the bond sell-off is not about to end despite the inverted yield curve. It is likely to cause more pain for EM countries.

<li>The Indonesian rupiah has outperformed most EM currencies, particularly other Asian currencies, and has done so with low volatility in contrast with the rising volatility of the EM FX index.</li>
<li>Looking ahead, headwinds may be appearing with the interest-rate differential working against the currency as the Fed starts raising rates and higher inflation leading to lower real rates.</li>
<li>While the rise in commodity prices is generating trade surpluses for now, the current account may turn negative from positive with a rise in imports accompanying the economy's reopening.</li>
</ul>
