We provide research and consultancy on Asian banks. Our focus is on what we call “Asian bank research, without the noise.” We are interested in the most critical swing-factors for banks, the NPL and credit cycle, and where we believe there is a gap between perception and reality. We often focus on the less studied components of bank financial statements.  Our research is highly thematic, sometimes examining unlisted banks and companies as a window on mainstream banks. 

Being independent allows us to look at smaller banks, often overlooked by others. Analysis of BIS bank guidelines in the context of Asia, is also a focal point, while we also analyze global banks operating in the region. We use what we believe is the most comprehensive, reliable financials database, SNL Financial. S&P Capital IQ augments our database, with corporate data and CEIC, with economics.

<ul><li>The six banks under our coverage reported a combined net profit of Bt43.6bn in 3Q24, growing 8.6% YoY and 3.0% QoQ, which was 6% above our expectations.</li><li>This was due to: I) BBL’s better-than-expected non-interest income (NII) from mark-to-market investment gains, and ii) lower-than-expected provisions from SCB and KKP.</li><li>We maintain a Neutral rating on the banking sector, as the short-term growth drivers remain unclear. </li></ul>

<li>The bank has more than 1/4 of its loans in manufacturing &amp; commercial where loan balances are down 4.0% YTD and down 4.3% QoQ</li>

Where there are many other areas of interest in Asia, globally, the figures just out for Bangkok Bank are incredible to us, not in a positive way.

Bangkok Bank - BBL Sees 29% Higher NPLs YTD and Core Manufacturing & Commercial Loans -4% YTD

<ul><li>The 3Q24E performances of the four mid- to large-sized banks under our coverage should not be particularly impressive, reflecting cautious market sentiment.</li><li>This is evident in an expected contraction in loan portfolios and high levels of provisions, while net interest margins (NIM) are anticipated to decline slightly QoQ.</li><li>We estimate total net profit to be around Bt38.6bn, representing a 4.3% YoY increase but a 3.0% QoQ decline. </li></ul>
