February Semiconductors Show Onset of COVID-19 Decline

WSTS, the agency that tracks monthly semiconductor revenues, reported this week that the decline of the semiconductor market has continued to slow in January.  Still, excessive capital spending, COVID-19, and trade wars are likely to prevent the market from realizing a full recovery in 2020.

It's still early to understand the full implications of Wuhan's coronavirus outbreak, but we can look to the 2008 global financial collapse and current market conditions to get a good grasp of where the extremes are.  In brief, the current market oversupply limits the gap between the best-case and worst-case scenarios.  Without any coronavirus impact, the market should experience a decline of 0-5%.  If there is a serious impact from the coronavirus then a decline of no more than 10% can be expected.
