Over the 12 months to end-March 2025, VinaCapital Vietnam Opportunity Fund (VOF) reported a 4.7% decline in NAV per share on a sterling total return (TR) basis, driven predominantly by profit taking in some of VOF’s largest holdings. The fund underperformed the VN Index, which posted a 2.4% loss (affected by US dollar weakness, with the US dollar return being a modest 0.4%), over the 12-month period, while it remains ahead of the index over the long term (outperforming by 1.3pp per annum over the last 10 years). In April, the US’s tariff announcement led to a market sell-off, and currently the VN Index is 4% and VOF’s NAV 5% lower than end-March. VOF’s active engagement with investee companies can support them in navigating more turbulent times.

Vietnam: Global Index Inclusion & Passive Flows

VinaCapital Vietnam Opportunity Fund’s (VOF’s) sterling net asset value (NAV) per share increased by 9.1% over the year ending October 2024 in total return (TR) terms, compared to the Vietnamese equity market’s 14.1%, as measured by the VN Index. Vietnam’s equities are benefiting from increased interest from local retail investors, driven by low deposit rates, alongside favourable economic prospects, including a revival of exports. In 2024, Vietnam’s GDP growth is expected to accelerate and corporate earnings on average to grow at double-digits (LSEG Data & Analytics consensus). VOF’s shares trade at a 25% discount to NAV (vs a five-year average of 18%) and offer a 2.5% dividend yield.

VinaCapital Vietnam Opportunity Fund - Positive earnings outlook in Vietnam

VinaCapital Vietnam Opportunity Fund (VOF) posted a one-year NAV TR in US dollars to end-October 2023 of 13.1%, versus 2.8% for the VN Index, as a result of the rebound from last year’s market trough. VOF’s NAV TR since end-2022 of 9.1% was driven by financials and materials investments. Given the improving outlook for real estate and several of VOF’s portfolio companies in the sector, VOF reversed US$26.8m of the US$52.9m in write-downs recognised in the December 2022 interim report. VOF continues to pay out 1% of opening NAV in dividends, with the next payment due in December at US$0.07 per share, implying an annualised dividend yield of 2.4% based on the last closing share price.

VinaCapital Vietnam Opportunity Fund’s (VOF’s) sterling net asset value (NAV) per share decreased by 8.8% over the year ending June 2023 in total return (TR) terms, outperforming the Vietnam VN Index and its direct peers in a tough environment. The Vietnamese economy recently experienced headwinds from a liquidity crunch in the real estate industry, which represents roughly a fifth of Vietnam’s equity market capitalisation and a fourth of VOF’s NAV, as well as from slowing exports. That said, the downside protections embedded in many of VOF's investments provide the fund with a certain cushion against these real estate sector challenges. VOF’s shares trade at a 14% discount to NAV (broadly in line with the long-term average) and offer a 2.6% dividend yield.
